Terrible Love Wine brings small batch sips to Hyde Park

The Context: Austin business owner Brian Knowles launched Terrible Love Wine in September. Located in the former band building of the Baker Center in Hyde Park, the new wine bar sits next to Terrible Love Coffee, which Knowles started as a trailer in 2021 before moving to the center in 2023.

What’s special about it: Wine director Kendall Jackson built out the menu to feature low-intervention, small-production wines from unexpected regions, including Mexico, Japan and Palestine. The by-the-glass menu changes frequently.

Looking for a libation? The bar serves:

  • Champagne, orange wines and sparkling and non-sparkling red, white and rosé wines

  • Dessert wines, local rotating beers and draft cold brew

  • Low-ABV drinks, including sake-based and vermouth-based options

  • Non-alcoholic wines

What’s on the menu: Food options include tinned fish, a cheese plate, a charcuterie board and Nougatine Bakery baguette served buttered or as a ham sandwich.

One more thing: The wine bar is 21+ at all times.

Austin airport likely to see busy travel days surrounding Formula 1 Race

Travelers this October, especially those for Formula 1, should prepare for long lines at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The details: Airport officials expect possible record-breaking busy days at the airport Oct. 22 through Oct. 27. The busiest day is anticipated to be Oct. 26, the day after the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas on Oct. 25.

Going forward

Airport officials recommend the following tips to travelers:

  • Arrive 2.5 hours before departure for domestic flights and 3 hours before departure for international flights

  • Allow extra time for checking luggage, returning rental cars or parking before joining the security line

  • Use either the upper level for departures or the lower level for arrivals when dropping off passengers

There are four security checkpoints leading to all gates. The first checkpoints open at 3 a.m..

The background: ABIA recorded its busiest month ever for passenger traffic in June, servicing 2,102,853 departing and arriving passengers. The second busiest month was recorded in July, with 2,102,655 departing and arriving passengers, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

New North Loop park to offer playground and pickleball court

A new 1.02 acre park named Millie at Hangar is opening in North Loop this fall. Located at 403 E Koenig Lane, the park is situated on the east side of Hangar, an apartment complex developed by Seco Ventures that is opening next year.

A closer look: The park features several amenities, including:

  • A sports court

  • A heritage oak tree

  • A 3,000 pound play slide and a playscape for children

  • A 50-foot mural designed and painted by artist Luis Angulo

What’s in a name: The park is named after Mildred "Millie" Inks Davidson Dalrymple, honoring the aviation history of North Loop. She took flying lessons at the local airfield during World War II before joining the Women Airforce Service Pilots and receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.

Stay tuned: Seco Ventures will transfer ownership of the park to Austin Parks and Recreation in late October. The city will then open it to the public.

Experts: Hardening homes against disasters could drive down Texas home insurance costs

The average annual insurance premium for a Texas homeowner rose 79% in six years, from less than $2,000 in 2020 to more than $3,500 this year, Texas Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford told state lawmakers Oct. 5.

The overview: The rise in home insurance costs has been caused by severe weather, high inflationary costs impacting home repairs and "the concentration of risk" in the insurance market, Crawford said.

Experts said hardening homes against severe weather could help reduce expensive losses from disasters, resulting in lower insurance premiums.

Zooming in: Proponents of home-hardening incentives have pointed to their success in other Gulf Coast states, such as Alabama. Texas consumer advocacy groups and the insurance industry backed proposals to create a similar grant program last year, according to previous Community Impact reporting, but those measures did not pass.

"Resilience helps homeowners long before it shows up in an insurance bill because a stronger home holds up better when the storm comes," said Chelsea Stallings, a regional vice president for the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.
