San Antonio eyes new segment of Leon Creek Greenway

San Antonio City Council is working toward another segment of the Leon Creek Greenway in District 8 with a recent ordinance authorizing city staff to acquire an estimated 1.32 acres of land near I-10 and Camp Bullis.

In a nutshell: Situated in District 8, the land will be used in a project designed to connect The Rim to Raymond Russell County Park, according to city documents.

Currently, six out of the seven required acquisitions have been made. City staff have been involved in negotiations with the owner of the final portion, MPII Inc., since November 2024 and have made a final offer of $100,000, which is above the property’s estimated fair market value of $43,500. Because the owner has not responded or replied with a counteroffer, the ordinance gives city staff condemnation authority if further negotiation attempts fail.

The land is located along Leon Creek and within the 100-year floodplain, with a significant chance of flooding during heavy rains, city documents state.

Crunch Fitness to open new $5M gym in North San Antonio

This national gym chain is continuing to expand in the San Antonio area, planning to open its third gym in the past two years.

Two-minute impact: Crunch Fitness broke ground on a new, 35,000-square-foot location in Northern San Antonio, according to a Dec. 8 news release.

It’s located at 4319 Thousand Oaks Drive—inside the location of a former Gold’s Gym—and is expected to open sometime this summer.

The location will be owned and operated by The Undefeated Tribe, a franchisee group led by owner Tony Hartl, according to the release. The group currently owns 41 gyms across the United States.

"We are so excited to bring the Crunch Fitness brand to Thousand Oaks Drive and offer outstanding and affordable fitness," Hartl said in the release.

Thousand Oaks will be the chain's seventh overall in the San Antonio area, with the company opening two others on the city's North Side last year, according to previous reporting from Community Impact.

Guadalupe County could receive up to $1M for flood warning sirens

Guadalupe County Commissioners entered into an agreement Jan. 6 with the Texas Water Development Board, or TWDB, for outdoor warning signs.

The county is eligible to receive up to $1 million in financial assistance for eligible expenses from TWDB; however, that assistance could be reduced if the county fails to submit approved project plans for the full amount awarded under the agreement by December 31, 2026.

The gist: Guadalupe County is expected to submit a project plan with projects in flash flood-prone areas where TWDB has found a history of consistent or severe flooding for which the installation, maintenance and operation of one or more outdoor warning sirens is warranted, according to the grant agreement.

Following project plan submission, the executive administrator will provide a letter of approval or request changes to the plan submitted. The executive administrator is that of the TWDB or a designated representative, the grant agreement states. Upon project plan approval, TWDB will provide Guadalupe County with a 25% advance of the approved project plan budget.

The growing need: Community Impact will expand its Texas footprint in 2026, launching three new markets: Denton, Bryan-College Station and Allen. The expansion will bring hyperlocal news to 150,000 additional residences across Texas.

The demand for trusted, localized reporting is at an all-time high. Across Texas, many communities face shrinking coverage, leaving residents without reliable information.

“Right now, the only way the City of Allen can inform residents—outside of their website and social media—is through the water bill, which many residents don’t always see,” said Miranda Talley, Allen General Manager at Community Impact.

Similar challenges exist in Denton and Bryan-College Station, where rapid growth and evolving local issues outpace traditional news coverage. By expanding into these three markets, Community Impact aims to fill these gaps, keeping residents connected to local news.

Stay informed and connected: With the addition of Denton, Bryan-College Station and Allen, Community Impact continues its mission to strengthen Texas communities through reliable, locally focused journalism.

Residents can subscribe to the Denton, Bryan-College Station, and Allen newsletters to get the latest local news delivered straight to their inbox.
