South Elm Street bridge in Keller to be demolished, reconstructed in February

The bridge along South Elm Street in Keller is expected to be closed for four months starting in February.

What residents should know: Elm Street will be closing at Pecan Street with southbound traffic on Elm Street detouring to US 377 as a reconstruction improvement project continues in Old Town Keller.

The bridge will be demolished and reconstructed to meet current floodplain standards, Public Works Capital Projects Manager Rick Hardcopf said in an email. The new bridge will also have pedestrian access to cross the creek beneath the bridge, he said.

“Work on Elm Street is like replacing a car engine while you’re driving the car,”he said. “We’re working within the space constraints of a narrow, developed project corridor and need to build new infrastructure while keeping all the existing services running and maintaining public access and safety during construction.”

The background: The reconstruction project, which the city’s public works department said is currently budgeted at $30.7 million, is part of a larger effort to improve Old Town Keller.

Denton County commissioners approve 10-year tax abatement for $1B MP Materials factory

The Denton County Commissioners Court approved a 10-year tax abatement for MP Materials to possibly build a new facility in the county.

What happened? Commissioners Bobbie Mitchell, Kevin Falconer and Ryan Williams all voted in favor of the abatement Jan. 29 during a regular Commissioners Court meeting. Commissioner Dianne Edmondson and Judge Andy Reid were not present for the vote.

The move allows MP Materials to incur a 10-year tax break of 50% of real and personal property taxes, which will add up to $9.3 million, according to Denton County documents.

A location in the town of Northlake is being considered as a second location for a new MP Materials manufacturing plant, according to town documents. This plant, which is referred to as the “10X Facility,” would be a more than $1 billion investment from MP Materials.

Diving deeper: If the second plant is built in Denton County, one of the requirements is hiring at least 1,000 full-time employees with an average annual salary of $74,315, according to court documents.
