Austin moves to limit new parking built near transit lines

City Council is seeking to limit the amount of new parking that can be build around future light rail lines.

The details: Under a resolution approved March 26, the city will explore limiting off-street parking in new development near Austin’s equitable transit-oriented development, or ETOD, districts. Those zones are being implemented near planned Austin Light Rail lines through Central, East and South Austin.

The proposed ETOD parking caps would follow the city’s recent elimination of minimum parking space requirements for new construction, a policy some officials have framed as a barrier to development and affordability.

Council member Krista Laine, the measure's sponsor, said a “soft cap” on parking is meant to encourage more intentional planning near transit, and support a more walkable and affordable city.

What else: Separately, council also approved a plan to begin splitting parking fees from residential rents in Austin.

Round Rock ISD further lowers enrollment projections while planning 2026-27 financial year

Round Rock ISD lowered student enrollment projections and related funding for the 2026-27 financial year, as administrators continue the budgetary planning process.

This comes as the district's chief financial officer said in February that the district is already anticipating reductions in positions ahead of the coming school year.

The overview: The February budget proposal for the 2026-27 financial year showed $492.16 million in revenue paired with $490.13 million in expenses. In the updated proposal shared March 26, revenue decreased to $482.78 million, with $480.94 million in expenses.

The details: A reduction from 45,500 students to 45,000 projected for total enrollment led to about $9.3 million less in anticipated state funding. The district's proposed budget now includes about $5.5 million less in allocations for positions and $3.8 million less in program reductions.

CFO Dennis Covington said the updated enrollment numbers come from recent demographic updates from Zonda Education, the district's demographer.

Officials celebrate new Southwest crew base at Austin airport

Austin leaders celebrated the opening of a new Southwest Airlines crew base March 25, a part of the airline's local expansion plans supported by an economic deal with the city that advanced last year.

The details: Southwest is now the largest carrier at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and plans to continue growing its local presence. The crew base, or a hub for airline employees, is a key feature of Southwest's new incentive agreements with both the city and state. It's eventually expected to create more than 2,000 jobs over the coming years, mainly pilots and flight attendants with positions paying an average salary of $180,000.

Southwest previously said the crew base would open this March with around 335 pilots and 650 flight attendants, and would grow its headcount to around 2,000 by mid-2027.
