Meet an Opera Singer

The event teaches children about the genre of opera singing through a presentation, Q&A and recital with a Houston Grand Opera teaching artist. This showcase is included in the price of general admission into The Woodlands Children’s Museum.

Young Makers Market

Attendees can shop original artisan pieces and crafts in this mini-arts festival at Market Street dedicated to empowering student artists grades 3-12. The event is produced by The Woodlands Arts Council.

Align Coffee Co. is now serving caffeinated beverages and baked goods along FM 1488.

The gist: The locally owned, specialty coffeehouse held its soft opening on July 3 in the Magnolia area, co-owner Yael Gurwitz-Elkin confirmed.

Gurwitz-Elkin owns and operates the location alongside her husband, Jeff Elkin.

What they offer: Customers can enjoy a spread of menu items at Align Coffee Co., including coffee sourced from espresso beans and blended with additive-free dairy, house-made nut milks and handcrafted syrups, Gurwitz-Elkin told Community Impact.

The Woodlands Township is seeking volunteers to fill several vacant positions on the township's Residential Design Review Committee for the villages of Creekside Park and Indian Springs, with a deadline of Aug. 7 for interested parties to apply.

To serve on the committees, volunteers must own property in and resident in the respective village.

The background: The RDRC acts as a design and review group representing residential viewpoints as part of an evaluation and approval process upholding The Woodlands' Residential Development Standards for home design and renovation requests, according to information from the township.

The committees include at least three people elected by village residents and property owners, and they serve one-year terms.

Compassion United celebrated the opening of two new transitional homes July 13 at its Miracle City campus in Conroe, more than doubling the nonprofit’s residential capacity for people working toward long-term independence.

The details: The nonprofit’s previous transitional homes had space for 10 men and four women. With the new additions, Compassion United will increase its capacity from 14 to 32 residents once the homes are occupied, Director of Communications Jessica Clark said. 

One home will serve up to 16 men, while the other will serve up to 16 women. Each roughly 3,000-square-foot home will also have a live-in house manager who will provide support to residents.

The organization was awaiting its final certificate of occupancy as of July 13, with residents expected to begin moving in the following week. Six applicants are prepared to move in, and Compassion United officials said additional beds may still be available.
