Fort Bend ISD received a ‘B’ accountability rating for the 2025-26 school year from the Texas Education Agency based on its A-F accountability system, according to TEA data released Aug. 14.

The details: Fort Bend ISD’s overall rating increased from an 80 out of 100 in 2024-25 to an 82 in 2025-26, per TEA data. Both scores are up from 2022-23 and 2023-24 when the district scores a 79.

TEA provides a districtwide, and campus-specific accountability ratings. Overall, 70 of 81 Fort Bend campuses received a rating of ‘C’ or higher, with TEA data showing:

• 23 campuses receiving an ‘A’

• 26 campuses receiving a ‘B’

• 21 campuses receiving a ‘C’

• 11 campuses receiving a ‘D’

Across the district, 15 campuses improved by at least one letter grade and the district had zero ‘F’ rated campuses down from three in 2024-25.

Notable quote: “Our improvement over the past two years is a testament to the intentional implementation of the systems and accountability our district and campus leaders put into place,” Superintendent Marc Smith said.

Landry’s Seafood House, a Gulf Coast and New Orleans inspired restaurant, has opened a new location in Sugar Land, officials announced in an Aug. 25 news release.

On the menu: The restaurant offers seafood dishes such as oysters, alligator, shrimp and crab cakes as well as salads, sandwiches and pasta, according to its website. The happy hour menu offers $6 cocktails and discounted beer and wine.

The Sugar Land location also features an on-site playground as well as offers catering and private dining services, per the release.

The subway at George Bush Intercontinental Airport—designed by Disney engineers using the same technology used in Disneyland—recently celebrated 45 years of service, per an Aug. 3 news release from the Houston Airport System.

How it happened: The airport was expanding heavily in the 1970s, as was Disney’s linear induction motor technology for transportation across the Disneyland theme park. Per the release, the company was looking into expanding the use of its technologies at other facilities, which is when they set eyes on IAH.

Disney eventually put a successful bid in for the project in 1979, with construction ending and the subway opening in 1981. Per the release, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck attended the grand opening, marking the occasion with a Disney touch.

The bottom line: IAH saw 12.4 million international passengers in 2025, with the Disney transit system serving over 3.3 million passengers. Houston Airport System officials said the foundation of that travel around the terminals can be attributed to Disney’s technology and some "Disney magic."

The Texas Department of Insurance must take action to promote competition and “prohibit excessive or unfairly discriminatory rate setting" in the state's homeowners insurance market, Gov. Greg Abbott said Aug. 24.

The background: Texans are paying the fourth-highest home insurance premiums in the nation, Community Impact previously reported. State data shows that the average Texas home insurance premium nearly doubled from $1,791 in 2016 to $3,506 in 2025.

The details: Abbott asked the TDI to prohibit insurers from using the age of a home and homeowners' personal data when setting rates; create a task force targeting insurance fraud; study the impact of inflated insurance claims; and require insurers to consider a homeowner's participation in a roof fortification program when writing policies.

Another perspective: "Under Greg Abbott, Texas has been one of the most expensive states in the country to own and maintain a home," Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic candidate for Texas governor, said in a statement. "If Abbott really wanted to lower costs, he would have done it in the last 12 years."
