WilCo officials purchase 253 acres in Georgetown for future Justice Complex

Williamson County commissioners unanimously approved a $75.82 million purchase of 253 acres of land in Georgetown on March 24, intended for the future Justice Complex, according to a news release.

Learn more: Because Georgetown is the county seat, the Justice Complex must be located within the city’s limits or in its extraterritorial jurisdiction.

The land purchase includes four pieces of property in southwest Georgetown, including a 134-acre portion at 1200 CR 110, and 119 acres south of Sam Houston Avenue and east of Maple Street, the release states.

There are also several existing county buildings on SE Inner Loop, providing for more efficient government operations, Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey said at the March 24 meeting.

“[That’s] why there's so many acres there, so it can become a campus,” Covey said.

What’s next: The county will hold a public information session about the Justice Complex project April 21 from 5-7 p.m. at 3189 SE Inner Loop in Georgetown.

Austin’s I-35 cap-and-stitch vision faces uncertain funding future

The outlook for Austin's ambitious plans to cover stretches of the redesigned I-35 with public amenity decks remains unclear due to the high costs of constructing the project, which city staff advised not to fund as of this spring.

The details: The Texas Department of Transportation's multibillion-dollar Capital Express Central will widen I-35 and lower interstate lanes below street level from downtown to North Central Austin. As that work continues, a local "cap and stitch" program to add decks covering the highway was proposed as a city mitigation of the state project.

What you need to know: City Council committed last year to pay TxDOT $104 million to add a series structural supports along I-35 needed for any future decks to be built. But no funding has yet been set aside for the development of caps and stitches or public amenities, now projected to cost more than $600 million, and city staff recommended against any financing for the project as of this spring.
