Officials with The Sweet Swirl celebrated an Aug. 14 opening for the new location in Humble, according to a post on the business’s Facebook page.

The Sweet Swirl offers an assortment of sweet treats and snacks, including ice cream, slushies, frozen hot chocolate, floats, espresso and coffee, and milkshakes, per the business’s website.

A special district aimed at alleviating flooding in the Lake Houston area—that was created by state lawmakers in May 2025—will be holding its first meeting on Aug. 24.

In a nutshell: The Lake Houston Dredging and Maintenance District was created via House Bill 1532 during the 89th Texas legislative session, as previously reported by Community Impact. The district was designed to fight flooding and the buildup of sand and sediment in Lake Houston by overseeing dredging operations.

What’s happening? Residents are welcome to attend the meeting, according to an Aug. 21 social media post from Houston City Council Member Fred Flickinger. Topics planned for the Aug. 24 Lake Houston Dredging and Maintenance District meeting include:

• Creating district bylaws
• District project scopes, maps, cost, funding plans and milestones
• Comment from members of the public

The Harris County salary grievance committee recommended a 30% raise for the county treasurer in a 6-3 vote Aug. 20.

What happened: County Treasurer Carla Wyatt made an appeal to the nine-member committee, asking for a 118% salary increase to bring her in line with the income of the county’s other elected officials. The committee did not meet Wyatt’s request, instead recommending a 30% pay bump to $181,411.

The impact: Wyatt’s request comes as the county is facing a $181 million shortfall. With the new fiscal year starting Oct. 1, OMB and the court will work to finalize the budget and mitigate the projected shortfall. The court is expected to set the tax rate at its Sept. 8 meeting and adopt the new budget Sept. 17.

This November, Libertarian Ted Brown, Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico are running to be Texas' next U.S. senator.

The overview: Each state has two U.S. senators serving staggered terms, with Ted Cruz and John Cornyn currently representing Texas. Cornyn ran for reelection but lost his primary race, and the winner of the November election will replace him in January.

Paxton advanced to the general election after beating Cornyn in a primary runoff, while Talarico beat two other contenders in the Democratic primary, Community Impact reported. Brown was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

At the polls: Early voting runs from Oct. 19-30 for dozens of statewide and local races. Election Day is Nov. 3.
