PREVIEW: League City to consider amending live-aboard ordinance

Following last year’s decision to pass a controversial ordinance requiring inspections and permits for boats, League City City Council will consider amending the ordinance at its May 12 meeting.

How we got here: City Council voted 7-1 to approve the ordinance creating regulations for live-aboard vessels, abandoned and derelict vessels and sanitation within city waterways in December, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

What’s different: The amendments up for consideration would increase the cap for how many days of the month someone can live on their boat and make it easier to reapply for a permit after a failed permit application, Mayor Nick Long said.

Also of note: City Council will also consider a public camping ban, targeted at curbing people living in tents at the sportsplex and along parts of FM 2094 and FM 518, Long said.

Seabrook celebrates new milestone in strengthening firefighter readiness

The city of Seabrook is holding a May 18 ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new fire training tower.

The backstory: More than 20 years ago, the manufacturer American Acryl L.P. donated roughly 13 acres on Red Bluff Road to the city to support public safety and training facilities.

The details: The initiative is expected to promote long‑term public safety in the area and help advance the city’s ISO rating, which measures a community's fire protection capability, according to a note on the city’s website.

To celebrate the milestone, city officials and attendees can observe live demonstrations, including a rope rescue demonstration from Firefighter Andy Castiglione using the tower's new anchor system.

Q&A: Catch up with the Republican candidates for Texas attorney general ahead of the May 26 runoff

For the first time in over a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Republican Ken Paxton runs for U.S. Senate. Candidates on both sides of the aisle will compete in runoff elections May 26 after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primaries.

State Sen. Mayes Middleton of Galveston and U.S. Rep. Chip Roy of Austin are each seeking the Republican nomination for the seat.

The overview: Middleton and Roy were the two highest-performing candidates in a four-person primary race. The winner of the May 26 overtime round will face the Democratic nominee and potential third-party candidates in November.

The context: The attorney general serves as Texas' top lawyer, defending the state in court, filing consumer protection lawsuits and issuing opinions interpreting state law. The agency also enforces Texas' child support laws, investigates human trafficking cases and manages access to public records.

At the polls: Texans can vote early May 18-22 and runoff election day is May 26.
