Universal City awards $2.79M contract for 2023 bond projects

Universal City’s City Council awarded a $2,794,286 contract to Brooke Paving & Construction LLC on March 17 for Phase 1 of the city’s 2023 Street Bond Reconstruction Program.

What you need to know: Approximately $5.6 million in funding for the streets in the bond was allocated in the fiscal year 2025-26 general fund capital improvement budget, according to agenda documents. The following 10 streets will be reconstructed:

  • Churchwood
  • Medicine Rock
  • Crosswood Drive
  • Old Converse
  • Gamblewood
  • Persia Drive
  • Inkswood
  • Travis Drive
  • Logswood
  • 600 block of W. Wright Boulevard

The aforementioned streets will be repaved, driveway approaches will be replaced and curb and gutters will be improved. There will also be adjustments to some utility manholes and valves, according to agenda documents.

Remember this? Universal City voters approved Proposition A during a November 2022 special election, which authorized the issuance of $30 million in general obligation bonds for city street improvement projects.

Piada Italian Street Food now open in Schertz

An Italian fast-casual restaurant chain has opened its first San Antonio-area location.

What you need to know: Piada Italian Street Food opened March 25 inside the Schertz Station development at 18430 N. I-35, Ste. 100. According to previous reporting from Community Impact, several new restaurants have opened in the last six months within the shopping area such as Smoothie King, Dave’s Hot Chicken, Cava and Chipotle.

Piada Italian Street Food specializes in piadas, which are Italian-style, wrapped sandwiches, according to its website. The restaurant also offers chopped salads, customizable pasta bowls and more.

One more thing: A second San Antonio-area Piada Italian Street Food location is being planned for the Huebner Oaks shopping area on the North Side of San Antonio, according to permits the business filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. No official opening dates have been announced as of publication time.

San Antonio funds Lady Bird Johnson Park improvements

On March 19, the San Antonio City Council approved a $799,967 contract with Triton Design and Construction to build a series of park improvements at Lady Bird Johnson Park.

The gist: Located in District 10, Lady Bird Johnson Park is a large urban park located on the north side of Salado Creek at Nacogdoches Road, according to city documents. Current amenities include baseball fields, a community center with a gym, a pavilion, picnic tables, a playground, a softball field complex, a skatepark, soccer fields, a swimming pool and bathhouse, and a trailhead for Salado Creek Trail.

Improvements include 88 parking spots, including Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking, cyclocross bike improvements and an access route to the cyclocross bike improvements. 

District 10 council member Marc Whyte said the 2022 bond program project will enhance residents' experience with the park.

The project is funded by the 2022 General Obligation Bond Program and is included in the fiscal year 2025-26 capital budget. Construction is estimated to begin spring 2026 and be completed by winter 2027.
