Billboard in Round Rock faces removal amid ordinance violation

A billboard recently built on RM 620 in Round Rock has drawn attention from city officials, over a year after a political action committee attempted to petition the city in an effort to change a local sign ordinance.

What’s happening: The billboard—featuring two business advertisements on each side—is managed by MediaChoice, which handles a portfolio of static and digital billboards throughout the state, according to its website. Located at 16420 RM 620, in Round Rock’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, the signage violates a city sign ordinance that prohibits billboards from being placed within 150 feet of the roadway, City Manager Brooks Bennett told Community Impact.

In other news: The latest billboard in the Round Rock area comes after the city of Austin filed a notice of violation regarding another billboard in its ETJ. MediaChoice was also responsible for this billboard, placed near the intersection of Bee Caves Road and River Hills Road, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

WilCo officials advance creation of Central Texas Spaceport Development Corporation

Williamson County commissioners voted Aug. 19 to approve the creation of the Central Texas Spaceport Development Corporation in partnership with the city of Cedar Park.

The vote follows Cedar Park’s approval of the organization Aug. 7, and the two entities will work together to support spaceport development projects, according to county documents.

Explained: SDCs develop, manage and operate a spaceport, which are specialized launch and landing facilities for spacecraft, rockets and satellites. The corporations are eligible to apply for state and federal grants.

The SDC will be governed by a board of directors—three appointed by Cedar Park, and four appointed by the county.

The history: Williamson County originally had plans to partner with Burnet County to create an SDC. While it wasn’t a “prime time” for them, Long said, Texas law allows counties to partner with cities for the corporations.

What’s next: Following the county and city’s approval, a certificate of formation will be filed with the Texas secretary of state to formally establish the SDC.
