San Jacinto College receives 400K grant to expand tuition-free program

San Jacinto College received a $400,000 grant from the Greater Houston Community Foundation, or GHCF, to expand opportunities for eligible high school seniors through access to tuition-free college, according to a March 27 news release from the college.

The details: The funding will support the college’s Promise Scholarship endowment, which allows graduating seniors living within the San Jacinto taxing district to attend college with all in-district tuition and book costs covered. Since launching in 2021, the scholarship has supported more than 11,600 students and provided $10.3 million in tuition support, according to the news release.

League City Family Clinic, a health clinic offering personalized healthcare for all ages, opened Jan. 5, according to the owner.

The specifics: The clinic offers services like senior care, hormone replacement, weight loss management and pediatric care, according to the clinic's website. 

What else: The clinic is led by Dr. Hanan Hussein a board-certified family physician who has served the Galveston County area for 18 years, according to the clinic's website.

DATA: Greater Houston-area school districts saw student homelessness rise from 2021-26; foster care trends uneven

Student homelessness increased across many Greater Houston-area school districts over the last five school years, while foster care numbers showed a more uneven pattern from district to district, according to Texas Education Agency data released March 6.

The overview: Community Impact reviewed TEA data for 28 Greater Houston-area school districts to compare the number of enrolled students identified as experiencing homelessness or living in foster care in 2025-26 versus 2021-22. In the foster care data, Fort Bend ISD and Aldine ISD had the highest counts in 2025-26. 

In the homelessness data, Houston ISD stood above the rest of the districts shown, nearing 6,000 students in 2025-26. Other districts, including Alief ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Conroe ISD and Fort Bend ISD, all showed higher homeless student counts in 2025-26 than in 2021-22, while several others were flat or down.
