Jersey Village City Council unanimously decided to select outgoing council member Michelle Martin’s replacement at the upcoming regular July meeting after announcing her resignation.

In a nutshell: Applications for Place 3 on City Council are currently open and will close at 5 p.m. July 10, per the council action report. Applicants will provide a three-minute pitch to the council at the July 21 regular meeting, followed by council's official selection of the appointee who will immediately take the Place 3 seat.

“Not enough people put in for election,” Mayor James Singleton said. “If you’re interested, you should put in for it. Let’s hear your three minutes. It gives you a moment to show the public that you would like to make a difference.”

Martin recommended Ashley Brown, whom she had previously run against, as her replacement, stating she hopes someone with a similar heart and motive is chosen to fill the role.

Ahead of adopting the fiscal year 2026-27 budget June 22, the Cy-Fair ISD board of trustees will hold a public hearing June 18 regarding the budget.

What you need to know: The district's previous budget update at the May 21 special-called board meeting showed the estimated shortfall for FY 2026-27 sat at $67.4 million, prior to the board’s majority decision to add two budget lines regarding one-time stipends and health insurance totaling $13.5 million, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Documents for the June 18 meeting show CFISD’s estimated FY 2026-27 shortfall is now $80.9 million.

Harris County officials are urging caution as the National Weather Service has forecasted multiple days of heavy rainfall across the Greater Houston area.

What you need to know: Officials with the National Weather Service are maintaining a flood watch over a large swath of southeast Texas through June 18. The watch stems from a semi-stationary front moving across the region alongside a disturbance in the Gulf with a 60% chance of developing into a tropical storm before bringing additional rainfall to the region, NWS officials said. 

What’s being done? Gov. Greg Abbott signed a disaster declaration for 101 counties in southeast Texas, including Brazoria, Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend and Galveston counties June 15. Harris County and the city of Houston have also activated emergency response initiatives, such as lowering Lake Houston levels ahead of additional rainfall.

As thousands of airline passengers begin to touch down in Houston for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the George Bush Intercontinental Airport and the William P. Hobby Airport have revealed their newest amenities to meet high-volume needs, including a fully operational Terminal E at IAH and upgraded restrooms, officials said in a news release.

Two-minute impact: The Houston Airport System projects an estimated 4.5 million travelers from around the globe will land in Houston either as their destination or their connecting flight to another host city between June 12 and July 6, according to a news release.

This influx of passengers traveling through the city’s airways has prompted HAS officials to prepare accordingly with upgraded facilities and concessions, multilingual customer service and newly implemented fan activations in both of its airports.

The Transportation Advocacy Group of the Houston Region, or TAG Houston, held a webinar on the future of advanced air mobility June 3.

What’s happening: Sergio Roman, Texas Department of Transportation's director of emerging aviation technology under the aviation division, led a “pragmatic discussion” on the future of advanced air mobility. This includes unmanned drones and electric vertical takeoff and landing—or eVTOL—aircraft, to transport people and materials.

“We've all seen all the marketing sketches and autonomous passengers, drones zipping over gridlocked highways and completely untethered from the realities of public policy, physical concrete or power grids,” Roman said.

Explained: In March, the Federal Aviation Administration bestowed TxDOT with Project Nexus under the integration pilot program, or eIPP.

While Project Nexus encompasses Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and the Choctaw Nation, Roman said Houston will make its role vital in this undertaking as an immense industrial coastal corridor.

On the horizon: “In a perfect world,” Roman believes Phase 3 would begin in August or September of 2028.
