Applications for the city of New Braunfels Charter Review Commission are now available.

What residents need to know: Applications for the seven-member, City Council-appointed board opened Aug. 28. The charter review commission will review the city charter and submit recommended changes to the City Council.

All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Sept. 18. City Council will review all applications and make their appointments. Individuals appointed to serve on the commission will be required to complete one hour of training on the Texas Open Meetings Act, according to a news release.

Individuals interested must reside within the New Braunfels city limits. Applications are available online at www.newbraunfels.gov/apply.

Looking ahead: City Council is anticipated to appoint charter review commission members Sept. 28 or Oct. 12, according to previous reporting by Community Impact. Appointed commissioners will serve through May 2027, the release states. City Council is also expected to call a charter amendment election in May 2027, according to the release.

Meet the Trucks 2026

This family-friendly event will allow attendees to see emergency vehicles, construction equipment and garbage trucks up close. The first 30 minutes of the event will be “sensory friendly” and will not have flashing lights, loud horns or music.

Comal County Fair Parade

The parade will start at the Main Plaza and go down South Seguin Avenue. Floats will be featured from local businesses and sponsors.

40th Annual Gruene Music and Wine Festival

This four-day event will feature live music along with beer and wine tastings. Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way of Comal County, a local nonprofit organization.

Hays County was awarded over $39 million in federal funding to construct an overpass at the Union Pacific Railroad, or UP, crossing on Centerpoint Road. The project will eliminate the conflict between trains and roadway traffic.

The gist: On Aug. 14, the Centerpoint Crossing Elimination and Safety Project secured the $39.23 million federal award through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program, according to a Hays County press release.

The project extends from I-35 to FM 2439/Hunter Road. The federal grant will cover 80% of the total cost. The county and UP will fund the remaining 20%, or $9.81 million.

The details: Project plans outline an overpass over the railroad with two lanes going in each direction, a widened roadway with a median and shoulders and shared-use paths on both sides, according to the release.

The county has completed a preliminary engineering report and schematic design for the overpass. The process of acquiring right-of-way land and property rights and completing the final design is underway.

For the first time in over a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Republican Ken Paxton runs for U.S. Senate.

Democrat Nathan Johnson, a state senator from Dallas; Republican Mayes Middleton, a state senator from Galveston; and Libertarian Tom Oxford, an attorney from Nederland, are running to replace him this November. Community Impact asked the candidates for their perspectives on Texas' open records laws, state litigation and other topics.

How we got here: Johnson and Middleton each won their primary runoff elections in May, Community Impact reported, while Oxford was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Looking ahead: Early voting in eight statewide races and dozens of local elections runs from Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
