Project Mammogram marks 25 years of breast cancer prevention, treatment

Project Mammogram—a nonprofit that provides free breast cancer screenings to uninsured and underinsured patients—is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, said Brooke Baugh, director of development and programs for the Northeast Hospital Authority and Northeast Hospital Foundation, the organizations behind Project Mammogram.

The backstory: In 2001, Project Mammogram was founded by the Northeast Hospital Foundation with $5,000 in starting funds from the Kingwood Women’s Club, as previously reported by Community Impact. The organization offers services, including:

  • 3D screening mammograms

  • Diagnostic mammograms

  • Ultrasounds

  • Biopsies

  • Follow-up treatments, as needed

The impact: Joyce White, a nurse and Kingwood Women's club member, was instrumental in the creation of Project Mammogram, according to the organization's website.

Project Mammogram serves residents in 26 ZIP codes in parts of Harris, Montgomery and Liberty counties, as previously reported. Over the last 25 years, Project Mammogram has provided services to more than 13,000 people.

Humble ISD to host auxiliary job fair seeking employees for several departments

Humble ISD officials are hosting a job fair for auxiliary positions in several departments from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. July 15 at Humble Middle School, located at 11207 Will Clayton Parkway, Humble.

The specifics: HISD officials will be actively recruiting for a variety of positions, including roles in the district’s child nutrition, police, transportation, custodial and maintenance departments, according to a July 13 news release.

What’s next: Pre-registration for the event is not required, according to the release. HISD staff will be on-site to assist applicants with completing online applications, if needed.

YMCA of Greater Houston announces 22nd annual Operation Backpack kickoff

The YMCA of Greater Houston is launching the 22nd year of Operation Backpack, an initiative aimed at providing school-aged children with necessary school supplies.

The big picture: Serving roughly 30,000 community members across the Houston area, the annual backpack collecting and distribution event is kicking off ahead of the 2026-27 school year, YMCA officials announced in a July 10 news release. In order to participate, individuals can drop off new, unused backpacks at any of the 14 locations in the Greater Houston area through August 1.

In their words: "Every child deserves to walk into the classroom feeling prepared and excited to learn," Stephen Ives, president and CEO of YMCA of Greater Houston, said. "With YMCA Operation Backpack, our goal is to remove barriers that stand in the way of a child's success, so every student has the opportunity to connect and thrive. We’re grateful for the volunteers, donors and community partners whose generosity makes this effort possible.”

SHSU opens applications for new master’s in applied biomedical sciences

Sam Houston State University is now accepting applications for its new master’s program in applied biomedical sciences, per a July 7 news release. The inaugural cohort will begin this upcoming fall.

What you need to know: The new master’s program, which will be offered online, will include tracks in medical/healthcare artificial intelligence, healthcare technologies, regulatory affairs and clinical sciences, as previously reported. The application fee is waived for students who are applying for the fall cohort, per the news release. Interested students can apply through ApplyTexas, and the university will also be hosting virtual information sessions July 22 and July 30 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Some context: The new master’s program will also be connected to SHSU’s Institute for Medical Artificial Intelligence. The institute is working to advance education, research, innovation and the responsible use of AI in medicine and healthcare, per the news release.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo names new COO and general manager

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials announced the creation of a new C-level leadership position called chief operating officer and general manager.

In a nutshell: The new position—which will be filled by current Chief Revenue Officer Amber Burda—aims to unify strategic direction as well as align programming and strategy for the annual rodeo event, officials announced in a July 7 news release.

Burda has served as chief revenue officer since 2023, although she was initially hired in 2017 as the executive director of sponsorships, business and corporate development, where she led the creation of official rodeo sponsorships.

Sorting out details: Her focus will be on ensuring cross-departmental coordination to enhance operational efficiency, while aligning pricing and revenue strategies with the organization’s mission

In the new role, Burda will oversee most public-facing aspects of the rodeo, including:

  • Mission

  • Show operations

  • Ticketing

  • Sponsorships

  • Stadium presentation

  • The carnival


Burda will also be involved in the creation of the organization’s new agricultural complex along Hwy. 288, per the release.
