Katy ISD to increase meal prices for 2026-27 school year

Meal prices for Katy ISD students will increase next school year.

What you need to know: At a June 22 meeting, the Katy ISD board of trustees approved increasing student breakfast and lunch prices for the 2026-27 school year in a split 4-3 vote. Board members Cicely Taylor, Jim Davidson and Nathan Shipley cast the dissenting votes.

District officials said this is the first time breakfast prices and elementary lunch prices have increased since 2014-15. Meanwhile, secondary lunch prices have not increased since the 2016-17 school year.

How we got here: At the board’s June 15 work study meeting, Dagmara Gujda, associate director of compliance, nutrition and food service, said Katy ISD’s child nutrition fund balance lost $8.4 million during the 2025-26 school year due to significant shifts in both expenditures and revenue.

These shifts come from several sources, including the loss of two federal grants, a 21% increase in food prices over the last five years and rising personnel costs, Gujda said.

Fort Bend County renames jail to the Sheriff Milton T. Wright Jr. Detention Center

Fort Bend County officials gathered June 29 to rename the Fort Bend County Jail to the Sheriff Milton T. Wright Jr. Detention Center in honor of the county's longest serving sheriff.

The renaming, which was approved by Fort Bend County commissioners at a June 25 meeting, was spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Richmond, following Wright's death earlier this year.

Zooming in: Wright was first elected Fort Bend County sheriff in 1996 and served four terms through 2012, where he modernized the office with advanced technology, specialized divisions and inmate support programs.

Before serving Fort Bend County, Wright worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety and served in the presidential motorcade during the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy. He also served as a highway patrolman and was appointed to the Texas Rangers.

What they're saying: "Today, we are not simply dedicating a building, we are honoring a life," interim Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong said. "While buildings may stand for decades, a life of honorable service can inspire generations."
