RecoveryWerks! addresses adolescent treatment gap with outpatient recovery program

RecoveryWerks! is now offering a new level of care for teens and families impacted by substance use with Comal County’s first and only Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP.

The program launched in October and provides recovery support services for teens and families in rural communities affected by substance use, according to a news release.

The goal of the program is to partner with local agencies and advocate for strong community support systems to reduce the stigma of addiction and increase recovery success, according to its website.

The details: The new program represents a significant expansion, providing a structured, evidence-based treatment option designed specifically for adolescents, according to the organization’s website.

An IOP is intended to bridge the gap between inpatient treatment and traditional outpatient services. Participants receive several hours of therapy and support each week while continuing to attend school and remain engaged in daily life, the release states.

Comal County accepts $1.25M state grant for flood warning systems

Comal County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution accepting up to $1.25 million in funding from the Texas Water Development Board, or TWDB, to bolster flood water infrastructure and warning systems at a regular meeting Dec. 23.

What happened: The action authorizes the county judge to execute a grant agreement for an initial grant of $1 million in financial assistance to enhance outdoor flood warning sirens, monitoring technology and low-water crossing safety measures, with the ability to accept an additional $250,000 if needed, according to agenda documents.

The funding was allocated from Senate Bill 3, passed during a special session of the state’s 89th legislature, following severe flooding in July, which made $30 million available statewide to support flood mitigation efforts in 30 eligible counties, including Comal County, documents state.

Looking ahead: No exact timeline was presented to commissioners for when these projects would be completed, but the combination of grant funding and already-budgeted county resources could also allow all four phases of the project to be completed within the next year.

2 Wheel Kids Action Sports Park to break ground in New Braunfels

A new sports park named 2 Wheel Kids Action Sports Park is gearing up to break ground at 320 Caney Creek Road, New Braunfels, in February.

The 5.5-acre sports park is being developed by Brandon Beabout and Duke VanDeel. Beabout said VanDeel purchased the property in 2023.

About the project: The park’s philosophy is to be a skill-focused and family-friendly destination designed to build confidence, progression and community across multiple riding disciplines.

"The whole goal is to be able to give kids these skills in life that we don't learn without challenging experiences and skills of communication," Beabout said.

The sports park will offer tracks for gas-powered dirt bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes, RC cars and small gas-engine vehicles. The small gas-engine vehicles include mini bikes, pit bikes and youth gas units. 2 Wheel Kids Action Sports Park will also offer spring and summer camps where kids can learn track etiquette, ways to ride safely and how to have confidence. The sports park will be membership-based; however, day passes will also be available, Beabout said.

The growing need: Community Impact will expand its Texas footprint in 2026, launching three new markets: Denton, Bryan-College Station and Allen. The expansion will bring hyperlocal news to 150,000 additional residences across Texas.

The demand for trusted, localized reporting is at an all-time high. Across Texas, many communities face shrinking coverage, leaving residents without reliable information.

“Right now, the only way the City of Allen can inform residents—outside of their website and social media—is through the water bill, which many residents don’t always see,” said Miranda Talley, Allen General Manager at Community Impact.

Similar challenges exist in Denton and Bryan-College Station, where rapid growth and evolving local issues outpace traditional news coverage. By expanding into these three markets, Community Impact aims to fill these gaps, keeping residents connected to local news.

Stay informed and connected: With the addition of Denton, Bryan-College Station and Allen, Community Impact continues its mission to strengthen Texas communities through reliable, locally focused journalism.

Residents can subscribe to the Denton, Bryan-College Station, and Allen newsletters to get the latest local news delivered straight to their inbox.
