In San Marcos, two elected officials aim to shift their placement on the City Council, running for positions they don’t currently hold.

The gist: San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson and Place 6 council member Amanda Rodriguez have both filed to be placed on the Nov. 3 ballot for different positions than they currently hold.

Hughson will be a candidate for the Place 3 council member position, currently held by Alyssa Garza, and Rodriguez will be a candidate for mayor. She said the filing of Ryan Thomason's run for mayor influenced her decision not to seek the seat, and she elected to assist his campaign instead.

As of Aug. 4, Ryan Thomason and Rodriguez are the only candidates for San Marcos mayor. Rodriguez announced her intention to run for mayor in a July 27 social media post.

Also of note: Hughson will be running against incumbent Alyssa Garza this November for the Place 3 council member seat. As of Aug. 4, they are the only two candidates for the position.

Kyle-area residents will soon have a new 40,000-square-foot fitness center to utilize.

A housing development in Pflugerville, an apartment complex in Austin and pool expansions at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Cedar Park are among the five most expensive projects filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in the Austin metro this week.

1. Carmel East Phase 4 ($529.9 million): Carmel East Phase 4 is part of the final 954-homesite expansion of the Carmel Master-planned community in Pflugerville, Texas.

2. Aluna ($75 million): This project involves the construction of 7,305 square feet of leasing office and clubhouse space for a 372-unit apartment community.

3. Veterans Memorial Pool Expansion ($10.5 million): This project includes a proposed 8,000 square-foot wave pool building, a 1,250 square-foot event building and a 3,000 square-foot splash area at Veterans Memorial Park.

4. AA AUS Lounge ($10 million): This project includes interior renovation of the American Airlines lounge in the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

5. Westlake Dermatology ($5 million): This project involves the construction of a 4,262-square-foot building that will be the site of a new Westlake Dermatology location.

For the first time since November 2021, Canyon Lake has reached full capacity, following a series of large storms that caused flooding along the Guadalupe River, the lake’s main tributary.

How it happened: Canyon Lake levels have increased in part due to rainfall in the upper Guadalupe River Basin from the July 4, 2025, floods, which increased inflows into the reservoir and raised the elevation by nearly 15 feet by August 2025, Lindsey Campbell, communications director for the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, or GBRA, said in an email to Community Impact. The lake’s water levels also reached 909 feet mean sea level, or MSL, following heavy rainfall from the week of July 13. The reservoir was at 61% capacity in July 2025, according to data from the Texas Water Development Board.

Now that the lake is full, seven boat ramps managed by Comal County have reopened, with plans to open more in the future once debris clears Precinct 1 Comal County Commissioner Doug Leecock said.
