Across Conroe, Montgomery and Willis ISDs, each district offers a wide variety of Career and Technical Education programs tailored to individual students' interests and skill sets. The Texas Education Agency has an official framework for 14 distinct CTE career clusters. Within the 3 main districts, however, there are differences in how each operates.

Diving in deeper: A common theme behind all three districts' recent investments in CTE programs is the desire to properly set up students for success once they leave the district.

“Parents, students, business leaders and community members made it clear they wanted Montgomery ISD to provide more opportunities for students to explore careers, earn industry credentials, and graduate with real-world experiences that prepare them for success beyond high school,” MISD Superintendent Mark Ruffin said.

Looking ahead: All three districts have recently taken necessary steps to strengthen their CTE programs for the future.

Local Conroe restaurant Whistle Stop Cafe recently changed ownership in July and has completed phase one of a multi-step renovation plan.

Two-minute impact: Whistle Stop Cafe is a local diner that has been serving the Conroe community since 2011. Its previous owners, father and daughter Danny and Sarah Holley, recently passed down the restaurant to Anthony and Salina Tullos. In a goodbye message on their official social media, they thanked their long-time customers and family for their support and encouraged them to support the new owners as the restaurant transitions.

According to Whistle Stop Cafe officials, the new owners are looking forward to this next chapter while “keeping the heart of the Whistle Stop the same," focusing on "good, home-cooked food and friendly service."

Small changes alongside the cafe's interior include some updates to the menu with new items added such as Blue Bell ice cream, fresh-sliced deli sandwiches and Taco Tuesday.

On Sept. 3, Montgomery County commissioners will discuss and potentially take action to address wildfire activity in the area as well as hear the monthly road bond financial report.

What you need to know: According to the agenda documents, as of Aug. 31, county reports $188 million in bond proceeds and $4.23 million in interest income, bringing total revenue for the program to $192.23 million. Of that amount, commissioners have allocated $166.7 million toward road projects, leaving $25.5 million for future allocations. The county also has $67.6 million in cash remaining in its road bond account.

What else: Commissioners will also discuss action on wildfire activity amid discussions this year on disaster response needs after the Pauline Road fire.

Chili's To Go is now open at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston Airport System officials announced in an Aug. 25 news release. 

Check it out: Per the release, the 924-square-foot concept restores hot meal and bar service to Terminal E's pre-security space for the first time in more than a decade. The eatery is located on the arrivals level near Starbucks beneath the Oculus. 

Some context: Officials noted the Chili's To Go opening marks the completion of a four-year food and beverage rollout tied to the $1.458 billion IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program. Among the 16 food and beverage options that have opened through the program include The Annie Cafe & Bar, Velvet Taco, Chick-fil-A, Einstein Bros. and a full-service Chili's, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Greater Houston-area officials are monitoring conditions as a tropical system could bring heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding to the area through Sept. 2, per the National Weather Service.

What’s happening: The latest update from the National Weather Service states Tropical Storm Edouard is moving inland, and is expected to bring heavy rains and flash flooding to portions of the area on Sept. 2.

Gov. Greg Abbott at an Aug. 31 press conference said the forecast could include a storm surge of 2-4 feet in Chambers and Jefferson counties, as well as local rainfall getting as high as 10-15 inches, including in some areas getting 3-4 inches per hour.

While the rainfall is expected to affect the area’s rivers, it’s too early to tell if it will pose any imminent danger, Abbott said.

The office of Gov. Greg Abbott announced a $138 billion investment in Texas transportation infrastructure, including projects in the Greater Houston region, according to an Aug. 27 news release from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Unified Transportation Program for 2026 was approved during an August meeting of the Texas Transportation Commission.

The breakdown: The program’s funding is divided into two portions, $95 billion for transportation projects across the state, and $43 billion which is reserved for routine maintenance and development. The total of $138 billion is intended to be spent on projects and maintenance over the next 10 years, according to the news release.

The North Houston Highway Improvement Project continues to be a priority for the Houston District, with several projects planned within the first four years of the UTP.
