Williamson County voters will cast ballots at precinct-based polling locations on March election day

The Williamson County Republican Party will require voters to use a polling location in their specified precinct on election day for March primaries, a county official said.

This change will also require the Democratic Party to move to precinct-based voting in response, according to Williamson County Elections Administrator Bridgette Escobedo.

What you need to know: Historically, Williamson County voters have been able to cast their ballot at any county-run polling location. This will still be the case during early voting, which runs from Feb. 17-27, the official said.

However, on election day, March 3, voters must use a polling location in their specified precinct. An up-to-date voting precinct map can be found here. Residents can also check their voter registration card to determine which precinct they reside in.

Specific polling locations haven’t been released yet.

In related news: Voters in Williamson County will use hand-marked ballots, rather than a machine, following a commissioner court vote in June to switch to a ballot-on-demand system.

Texas Children's launches first Austin-based pediatric helicopter, expanding access to intensive care

Texas Children’s Hospital in North Austin has become the first pediatric hospital to have its own helicopter based in Austin.

The helicopter will allow Texas Children’s Hospital to provide faster critical care to more patients across Central Texas.

In their own words: “[The helicopter] represents Texas Children's long-term investment in this region and a commitment to bringing world-class pediatric, neonatal, and maternal care closer to home,” said Jeff Shilt, Texas Children's president of Austin and Central Texas, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 12.

How it works: Through the new helicopter, Texas Children’s may pick up patients from community hospitals who need specialized pediatric care and transport them to the North Austin hospital.

The mobile intensive care unit is operated by Texas Children’s Kangaroo Crew of registered nurses and respiratory therapists who can begin providing ICU therapies to stabilize patients at their bedside before arriving at the hospital.

The impact: The Austin-based helicopter can travel within a 120-nautical-mile service area, including Waco, San Antonio, Houston and College Station.

Williamson County Regional Park in Leander to receive turf field upgrades

The Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander will receive artificial turf upgrades for four fields through a sponsorship with Lonestar Soccer Club. Williamson County commissioners approved the turf project and sponsorship agreement at a Jan. 6 meeting.

About the project: The soccer fields will be converted from natural grass to artificial turf to help reduce impacts from drought and wear, and allow for longer playing time, Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey said at the meeting.

Utilizing artificial turf will eliminate maintenance costs associated with natural grass, Williamson County Parks and Recreation Director TW Dieckmann said at the meeting.

For the $8.9 million project, Lonestar Soccer Club will fund $6.5 million, and the county will pay for the remaining $2.4 million.

Diving deeper: Lonestar Soccer Club’s sponsorship will allow the club to receive priority scheduling, discounted usage rates and naming rights for the four fields. The club will also take ownership of maintenance and replacement of the turf in the future.
