Kemah City Council will discuss the use of Flock Safety automated license plate reader cameras at its Sept. 2 meeting.

What residents should know: City staff will hear from council members for direction on items to investigate surrounding the city’s use of the cameras, City Manager Cesar Garcia said.

In similar news: In August, League City became the first city in Texas to call a special election for voters to weigh in on whether the police department should continue to use Flock cameras, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

Margaritaville at Sea will become the Port of Galveston's seventh cruise line and offer weekly departures to Caribbean and Central American vacations beginning in October 2027, according to an Aug. 26 news release from Port of Galveston. 

The details: The Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Aug. 25 to accept an agreement with Margaritaville at Sea that includes weekly sailings from Cruise Terminal 28, with an initial one-year term and options to renew for two additional five-year terms, according to the release.

A new Verizon store will be opening its doors in League City toward the end of October, according to a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Greater Houston-area officials are monitoring conditions as a tropical system could bring heavy rainfall and the potential for flash flooding to the area through Sept. 2, per the National Weather Service.

What’s happening: The latest update from the National Weather Service states Tropical Storm Edouard is moving inland, and is expected to bring heavy rains and flash flooding to portions of the area on Sept. 2.

Gov. Greg Abbott at an Aug. 31 press conference said the forecast could include a storm surge of 2-4 feet in Chambers and Jefferson counties, as well as local rainfall getting as high as 10-15 inches, including in some areas getting 3-4 inches per hour.

While the rainfall is expected to affect the area’s rivers, it’s too early to tell if it will pose any imminent danger, Abbott said.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced over $6.3 million in grants for 27 organizations that serve veterans in the Southeast Texas region as part of the Texas Veterans Commission’s Grants Across Texas Tour initiative according to a news release. The TVC is Texas’ state department of veteran affairs.
