The details: Darkside Brick Oven Pizza Co. is in the process of constructing a new bar behind the restaurant at 25 Truss Drive in Boerne, just off of Hwy. 46.

Called Darkside After Dark, Owner Michael Hawes told Community Impact he expects it to open sometime in November.

The restaurant, known for its 70s and 80s themed decor and Star Wars memorabilia, will add to its diverse array of film tributes with this new Predator-themed bar.

The context: Darkside Brick Oven Pizza Co. serves up a wide range of New York-style thin-crust pizzas, from white margherita to BBQ brisket and more, according to the menu.

There’s also a selection of desserts, salads and sandwiches available as well.

Complete with jungle foliage, a Predator sculpture and a crashed helicopter, Hawes said the area is a true testament to the original movies from the 1980s.

While Tex-Mex and breakfast tacos are abundant throughout San Antonio, Jose Castellanos, owner of Pollo Picosito in Live Oak, said he wanted to put his own twist on the tried-and-true cuisine.

Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, Castellanos said he has been in the restaurant and hospitality business for 45 years, managing and owning a variety of eateries for decades.

Castellanos said the main priorities of his restaurant are simple—breakfast tacos in the morning, then puffy tacos and enchiladas for lunch.

“The people of San Antonio love breakfast tacos. Whenever I leave here for a couple days, I already start to miss them myself,” Castellanos said.

Texas lawmakers to investigate deadly Central Texas floods with new committees

The Texas House and Senate are launching new legislative committees to “get to the bottom of exactly what occurred” during this summer’s deadly Central Texas floods, state leaders announced Oct. 13.

The details: The bipartisan panels, known as the House and Senate General Investigating Committees on the July 2025 Flooding Events, will meet jointly to conduct “a comprehensive and thorough review” of the floods, House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said.

Lawmakers will be tasked with:

  • Identifying strategies to strengthen Texas’ disaster preparedness
  • Helping communities respond to future floods
  • Examining actions taken at summer camps in the flood zone

The background: During special legislative sessions this summer, lawmakers passed bills aimed at hardening summer camps against future disasters and improving local flood warning systems.

"While progress was made during the second special session to bolster Texans’ safety, the magnitude of this tragedy demands a comprehensive and thorough review," Burrows said in an Oct. 13 statement.
