Construction updates to Byron Nelson, Eaton's football stadiums delay opening

The construction completion dates for Byron Nelson High School and Eaton High School’s new football stadiums were pushed out due to construction updates, Northwest ISD’s board of trustees heard during a facilities update at the Oct. 26 meeting.

Other capital projects were discussed during the meeting, including updates to Byron Nelson and Eaton’s arenas and the guaranteed maximum price for the first phase of the Northwest ISD Central Campus Master Plan and Texan Stadium Renovation.

The overview

Sarah Stewart, NISD’s chief of facilities, said that Byron Nelson High School’s football stadium will be finished in February 2027, about three months after its original target completion date of November.

Eaton High School’s stadium will be completed in May 2027 after an expected November completion. Stewart said there were some delays over the summer with utility work that prompted the project completion to be pushed out. That project is 62% complete, according to the presentation.

North Fort Worth's Oliva Italian Eatery under new ownership in 17th year

Oliva Italian Eatery, a neighborhood restaurant near Timber Creek High School in north Fort Worth, welcomed new owners in mid-October.

The details: Steven Hudson and Joseph Borchardt took over the company Oct. 19, according to an announcement on social media.

Hudson said he’s excited to carry on the legacy of upscale service in a casual atmosphere, where “the quality of cuisine is just as important as the service quality.”

Oliva serves traditional Italian staples, including salads, chicken dishes, beef plates and a variety of pastas. It also has limited-time specials, like a smoked brisket risotto that recently came off the menu after two weeks.

The restaurant also offers catering services.

What’s next: Hudson said he wants to stay true to the restaurant's roots and continue to enhance Oliva’s culture, menu and legacy. He said the restaurant’s aesthetic is the only thing that may see a notable refresh and modernization.

'A bipartisan government': Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa announces next steps for political transition

At her first public event since winning the Nov. 3 election, Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa announced her initial plans for the transition between gubernatorial administrations, emphasizing her plans to work across the aisle in "building a government that is working for the people of Texas."

The overview: Hinojosa also announced the team leading her transition to the governor's office:

  • Joe Madden, former chief of staff for Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo

  • Former GOP state Rep. Ernest Bailes

  • Ryan Pollock, executive director of the Texas State Building and Construction Trades Council

  • Tamala Barksdale, a former Austin ISD trustee

Quote of note: "This is not about being a Democratic administration," she said. "I'm not going to be the governor for just Democrats—I'm going to be the governor for all the people of Texas."

One more thing: Hinojosa said Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, whom she unseated in the Nov. 3 election, had been "gracious" and expressed that his office would "fully cooperate with this transition and be helpful as they can."
