Donatos Pizza to bring 'Edge to Edge' toppings to The Groves

Donatos Pizza officials are planning to open a new franchise location in Humble, according to an April 15 TDLR filing.

Located in The Groves area, construction on the new 1,730-square-foot pizzeria is expected to begin in late June and wrap up by late November, per the filing.

What they offer: The Ohio-based chain is known for its create-your-own and signature pizzas with "Edge to Edge" toppings and crust options including thin, thicker, hand tossed and cauliflower.

In addition to pizza, the menu includes subs, calzones, chicken wings, salads, breadsticks and desserts. Pickup, delivery and catering services are also available.

Some context: In October, the company announced plans to open its first Houston-area location in Missouri City in mid-2026, as previously reported by Community Impact. The new pizzerias are coming as the company announced plans in May 2025 to open more than 100 locations across Texas.

Houston to implement a $5 administration fee, other countermeasures to help close growing budget deficit

Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced May 5 that the city will implement three new measures to help close a projected $209 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2026-27.

The overview: The three new measures include:

  • Declaring the Solid Waste Department a municipal utility under Texas state law
  • Implementing a $5 administration fee for all homeowners
  • Creating a right-of-way water fee

Together, these measures are projected to provide approximately $200 million in general fund relief, effectively closing the projected FY2026-27 budget gap, city officials said.

Something to note: The upcoming changes do not include raising taxes.

Final takeaways: These changes do not address the city’s FY 2025-26 budget deficit, which ends in June and currently sits around $174 million, largely due to overtime costs for public safety departments.

Houston will start its new budget season May 5 with a five-year forecast. Budget workshops will follow throughout the month, with FY 2026-27 set to begin July 1.

Q&A: John Cornyn and Ken Paxton face off in May Republican runoff for US Senate

On May 26, Texas Republican voters will choose their nominee for the U.S. Senate in a runoff election between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The big picture: The Republican race for U.S. Senate is one of several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

Cornyn and Paxton were the two highest-performing candidates in the eight-way primary race, with Cornyn securing 42% of the vote to Paxton's 41%.

At the polls: Early voting in Texas' runoff elections runs from May 18-22, and runoff election day is May 26.

Looking ahead: The winner of the May 26 overtime round will face the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate—state Rep. James Talarico of Austin—in the November midterm election. Third-party and independent candidates may also appear on the November ballot, and the winner of that election will be sworn in to the U.S. Senate in January 2027.
