Toyota Stadium renovation aims to secure 2031 Women’s World Cup bid

Toyota Stadium is under construction with $182 million renovations.

What you need to know: Construction started early last year, and portions of it are expected to be completed later this year. The project is funded through a public-private partnership.

The renovations will include:

  • Upgraded club spaces and seating
  • New luxury suites
  • New broadcast booths and press box areas
  • New stadium technology and broadcast capabilities

Quote of note: “When we started to go down this process of renovation, it was 100% about the fan experience and to improve the fan experience,” said Jimmy Smith, chief operating officer and chief financial officer for FC Dallas. “This will be the best soccer-specific stadium, potentially in the world of this size.”

Looking ahead: The renovations weren’t done for the 2026 World Cup, but Smith said they will help elevate Toyota Stadium to be competitive in securing the 2031 Women’s World Cup.

American Airlines celebrates 100th anniversary

Fort Worth-based American Airlines celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 15.

The first flight for the company was on a DH-4 biplane with a bag of mail, headed from Chicago to St. Louis, according to the airline’s website. Charles A. Lindbergh, the chief pilot of Robertson Aircraft Corporation, was the pilot of that trip. Robertson was one of the airlines that ultimately became American Airlines.

The background: What started as American Airways, the first operation building and hangar was at Fort Worth Meacham International Airport, which was once the headquarters of American Airlines at 201 Aviation Way, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the airline’s historical timeline, the company changed its name to American Airlines, Inc., in 1934.

According to its website, American Airlines operated the first plane to land at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1974. The headquarters moved from New York City to Fort Worth in 1979 and American established its first hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1981.

Parents, lawmakers say Camp Mystic’s license should be suspended. Health officials say their hands are tied.

Following hours of emotional testimony April 28, Texas lawmakers grilled state health officials about why they had not suspended the operating license of a Hill Country summer camp where 25 campers and two counselors died in a July 4 flood.

The details: Jennifer Shuford, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, said her team was reviewing Camp Mystic’s application for a renewed license and investigating multiple complaints against the camp, noting that the agency did not have the unilateral authority to suspend or revoke a camp’s license.

Rep. Drew Darby, a San Angelo Republican who authored camp safety legislation during a special session last summer, disagreed.

"The Legislature acted with specific intent to establish nonnegotiable safety standards, eliminate agency discretion and ensure no procedural mechanism could be used to keep a dangerous camp operating," Darby said April 28.

The background: State law requires that all Texas summer camps develop and annually update comprehensive emergency plans, set up warning systems to notify campers if something is wrong, Community Impact previously reported.
