Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin announced two lawsuits against individuals allegedly stealing homes with fraudulent paperwork during a press conference on Sept. 9.

Current situation: The lawsuits stem from the Harris County Attorney’s Office’s investigations into scammers committing deed fraud, Kamin said. According to a news release, scammers file fraudulent paperwork to obtain deeds to homes, selling or renting them to unsuspecting tenants.

The details: The lawsuits cover 10 homes in Harris County that the County Attorney’s Office alleges have been stolen. The scammers target families of different socioeconomic backgrounds, Kamin said.

Before you go: County residents can check to make sure no transfers have been filed for their home’s deed. If homeowners believe a suspicious filing has been made, they can file a complaint with the County Attorney’s Office.

To check that unauthorized changes haven’t been made to your deed:

• Type in the address and find the property’s “legal description” under “property details”

• Visit the Harris County Clerk’s real property document search portal

The Klein ISD board of trustees is slated to receive a report on the district’s academic progress and performance measured by the state accountability system during a Sept. 14 regular meeting.

In a nutshell: The Texas Education Agency released the district's A-F ratings Aug. 15, showing KISD maintained its ‘B’ rating with 88 out of 100 points, a two point increase from the previous year, per previous Community Impact reporting.

A-F ratings provide information on school and district performance to serve as a tool for parents, educators, policymakers and local communities to make informed decisions regarding student success, according to a TEA news release.

This November, four candidates are running to lead the Texas Comptroller's Office and serve as the state's chief financial officer.

The overview: Libertarian V. Alonzo Echavarria-Garza, Democrat Sarah Eckhardt, Green Party candidate Shehla Faizi and Republican Don Huffines are running for comptroller. Huffines, whom Gov. Greg Abbott appointed to the office in July, is considered the incumbent in this race.

How it works: The comptroller oversees government spending and administers the state's $1 billion education savings account program, which launched ahead of the 2026-27 school year.
