Bellaire City Council hits another stalemate on changes to planning, zoning regulations

In a March 16 meeting, Bellaire City Council members revisited a discussion regarding an ordinance that would change several planning and zoning regulations listed in the city’s Code of Ordinances.

The context: City Council previously discussed the list of proposed amendments during the March 2  meeting and voted on whether to raise the minimum front yard setback from at least 5% of the site depth to 15% of the site depth for properties less than 100 feet in the Corridor Mixed Use zoning district.

In similar news: With input from Director of Development Services Travis Tanner and Gary Mitchell, the city’s planning consultant, council members continued discussions on the current regulations, as well as another proposed amendment from council member Brian Witt. 

The takeaway: The amendment was voted on and failed to pass due to a tie vote, with council members Witt, Catherine Lewis and Jackie Georgiou in favor.

New pharmacy, infusion therapy office to open in Bellaire

A pharmacy and infusion therapy services medical office will open in Bellaire in 2026. Vital Care of Houston is a pharmacy offering in-office and at-home infusion therapy.

What is it: Infusion therapy is when a medication is administered through a needle or catheter, and is usually done when oral medicines are ineffective due to the severity of a patient’s condition, according to Vital Care of Houston.

Patients can come into the office and use one of its three suites—two semi-private and one private—or opt for the treatment to be done through at-home services.

One more thing: According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the renovation for Vital Care of Houston is $270,000 for a 1,600-square-foot existing suite within Bellaire Park. Construction is expected to be completed by April 30, according to TDLR. Details are subject to change.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo adds dress code to code of conduct

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials have announced a new dress code for entry, beginning March 17.

Sorting out details: The Rodeo has provided an update on its code of conduct for guests, according to its website.

The following is prohibited:

  • Clothing with "objectionable" material, such as obscene language or graphics
  • Excessively torn clothing or visible undergarments exposing excessive portions of the skin
  • Clothing or other attire of affiliation with a criminal street gang
  • Clothing or apparel that intentionally obscures the face, unless worn for cultural or religious reasons or a medical condition
The context: Since 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has featured traditional rodeo competition and country music performers. Each year, the Rodeo hosts several events, including auctions, cookoffs and concerts, all with the goal of promoting Western heritage, officials said.

Fleet Week Houston ship lineup announced

The city of Houston and the U.S. Navy announced the lineup of ships for the first-ever Fleet Week Houston.

The event: Fleet Week Houston will bring U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard vessels to the Port of Houston on April 15-22. During that week, the public will have the chance to meet and engage with service members, learn about the ships' roles in national defense and take ship tours.

Participating ships include:

  • USS Kearsarge (LHD-3): an assault ship designed for multi-purpose operations, including troop transport and aircraft support
  • USS Minneapolis-St. Paul (LCS-21): a littoral combat ship optimized for operations in near-shore environments with high speed and agility
  • USS Cooperstown (LCS-23): a littoral combat ship sharing the same advanced capabilities for coastal missions
  • USCGC Edgar Culbertson (WPC-1137): a fast response cutter equipped for a range of missions, including search and rescue, law enforcement and port security

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the city is excited to welcome Fleet Week.
