Harris County commissioners seek Flock accountability plan

The Harris County Commissioners Court approved a 3-2 vote Oct. 15 to review oversight on countywide camera surveillance systems with a working group.

The overview: Commissioners Adrian Garcia and Tom Ramsey cast the dissenting votes. Led by the county Sheriff's Office, the group will create a governance framework for automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, and develop contract amendments regarding data retention and sharing by February 2027.

The details: An Office of County Administration report requested by County Judge Lina Hidalgo found the following details regarding the county's ALPR cameras:

  • There are 154 county-funded Flock cameras, with 125 in commissioners precincts and 29 reported by county law enforcement.

  • A community-driven mapping project reported about 3,500 ALPR cameras in the county, while Flock data from December 2025 identified about 5,300 active cameras.

  • The county's Flock contract requires data deletion after 30 days and limits data access to county employees, agents and contractors of county law enforcement.

Q&A: Bayou Land Conservancy welcomes new executive director, Anna Weiss

The Bayou Land Conservancy named Dr. Anna Weiss as its new executive director on Aug. 24. Weiss succeeded Jill Boullion, who retired earlier this year after 10 years in the role. The organization, which preserves land along streams for flood control, clean water and wildlife, will celebrate 30 years at its Nov. 14 gala at Highland Pines Golf Club.

Weiss previously worked in Galveston at a collective impact community development organization called Fishing Galveston. In her new role, Weiss is focusing on several opportunities and goals:

  • Looking at land along the Spring Creek Nature Trail to potentially create a longer trail system
  • Learning about a proposed Scarborough development of about 7,000 homes on 5,500 acres of flood plain and floodway
  • Utilizing volunteers for trail building, field work days and invasive plant removal
  • Using the organization's equitable community engagement committee to bring in people of all backgrounds and demographics

Shef launches in Houston, bringing shared personal chef service to locals

A new online marketplace called Shef launched in Houston this month, connecting residents with local chefs who prepare and deliver fresh, homemade meals.

The specifics: Houston is the 10th market to join the platform. The service offers 1,351 diverse dishes from 60 different cuisines, allowing customers to choose meals by cuisine or preference, such as high-protein, vegetarian, gluten-free, GLP-1 friendly and kid-approved.

How it works: To use the service, customers select their zip code, household size, weekly meal count, diet preferences, proteins and favorite cuisines. Shef then recommends meals made by nearby chefs for delivery during the week.

One more thing: Weekly meal subscriptions start at 4 meals per week and cost $35 for the first week.

Shef is available for residents across the Greater Houston area, including Houston proper and cities such as Bellaire, Pasadena, Clear Lake, Cypress, Katy and Spring/Klein. Service also extends into Fort Bend County, including Sugar Land, Missouri City, Pearland and Friendswood.
