Austin transportation agencies launch real-time construction app

Austinites will now have access to information on local transportation projects that could impact commutes through a mobile app. City leaders celebrated the official launch of CTXGO on Oct. 1, a new tool from the Construction Partnership Program.

Some context: Participating CPP agencies include the city of Austin, Austin Transit Partnership, CapMetro, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Texas Department of Transportation.

How it works: CTXGO operates as both a free mobile app and website. Users can select from a variety of map layers to see real-time roadway information, including traffic congestion, incidents such as stalled or abandoned vehicles, and what electronic roadway message signs are currently displaying such as estimated travel times. The work zone map displays lane closures with expected start and end dates and times.

The local impact: Austin Mobility officials said more than $20 billion in transportation and infrastructure projects across multiple agencies are planned in Central Texas over the next several years.

Austin leaders look to local preparations as air taxis take off in Texas

Austin leaders are preparing for the arrival of new advanced aircraft like electric vertical take-off and landing, or eVTOL, vehicles.

The details: Under a new Federal Aviation Administration program, the vehicles are now being evaluated for passenger and cargo transportation as well as emergency response. The Texas Department of Transportation-led Project Nexus aims to eventually extend air taxi networks between Austin, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.

As the FAA manages airspace, Austin officials noted the city will likely have little authority over eVTOL operations. However, Austin's transportation, aviation, public safety, land use and legal departments will be involved in a local response to the arrival of the aircraft in town.

The city and LIFT Aircraft had previously partnered on an unsuccessful application to the FAA's eVTOL testing initiative. That proposed "Project AMP" would've used LIFT's fleet for air taxi operations cross Greater Austin, according to the 2025 project application obtained through a public records request.

COTA sets sights on water park, resort

After COTALAND officials debuted more than 30 rides and attractions for people of all ages during events Sept. 26-27, officials are looking ahead to a planned water park and on-site resort as part of Circuit of the Americas' push to grow its year-round offerings.

Zooming in: To fund the next phase, COTA officials entered into a partnership with investment firm Carlyle, according to an Aug. 24 announcement.

The financing amount was not disclosed; however, officials noted in the release that the partnership will not change COTA’s ownership structure and the venue will remain locally owned and operated.

The background: The idea for a water park has been floated before, with COTA Chairman Bobby Epstein telling Community Impact in 2025 that the project could follow COTALAND if demand supported further expansion.

The Carlyle agreement now brings financial backing to that plan.
