Denton ISD earns 'C' accountability rating from TEA for 2025-26

Denton ISD received an overall C rating from the Texas Education Agency’s 2025-26 accountability ratings.

The district’s overall score was 76 out of 100, a C rating. The TEA released the ratings Aug. 14.

How it works: The TEA accountability ratings evaluate districts on what students learn, how prepared they are for the next grade, and how a district prepares students for college, a career or military service, per the agency’s website.

The ratings are broken into three categories: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Student achievement is measured by graduation rates, performance on the STAAR test and how prepared students are for success after high school. DISD received a 77 out of 100 for student achievement.

The district received a C in the remaining two categories of school progress and closing the gaps. The school progress score was 73 out of 100 and closing the gaps was 75 out of 100.

Diving deeper: DISD also saw improvements at five of six of the district's lowest-performing elementary schools.

2026 A-F ratings: 24% of Texas public schools improved year-over-year

The Texas Education Agency released public school accountability ratings for the 2025-26 school year on Aug. 14.

"We use [A-F ratings] as a way to evaluate our own performance as adults, and then build action plans so that the way that we run our schools next year can be even better than last year," Education Commissioner Mike Morath said during an Aug. 14 news conference.

The overview: Across the state, 85% of campuses received a C rating or higher, which is considered “acceptable" academic performance.

Schools are rated based on three criteria: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps.

Zooming in: At least one district, Austin ISD, is at risk of being taken over by the TEA after two of its middle school campuses received their fifth consecutive failing grades this year. State law requires the agency to shutter those campuses or take control of the district.

Any potential state-mandated closures or takeovers will not happen immediately, as districts with concerns about their ratings have through Sept. 11 to appeal scores to the TEA.
