Officials from Bezos Academy, Texas Woman’s University and the Texas Women’s Foundation celebrated the grand opening of Bezos Academy Denton with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 2.

What happened? Bezos Academy Denton will offer a Montessori-style curriculum across six classrooms for preschool children ages 3-5. For enrolled families, all tuition costs will be covered by scholarships, including meals, educational materials and other programming. 

The preschool cost $6 million to build, with $1.5 million coming from the city of Denton, according to previous reporting. It was built on land owned by TWU and is located at 1820 Frame St., which is adjacent to the university’s campus.

The first day of classes for the Bezos Academy Denton will be Sept. 8 right after Labor Day. The Denton campus is the largest Bezos Academy in Texas, according to a news release.

According to previous reporting, 20% of the seats will be for children of TWU students, faculty and staff. The other 80% of the seats will be reserved for Denton families.

H-E-B is set to open two new locations in Denton. One will be located on Robson Ranch Road and the other will be on University Drive.

The update: The Robson Road location has an opening timeframe set between December and February, Mabrie Jackson, managing director of public affairs, H-E-B/Central Market, said in an email.

H-E-B posted on social media Aug. 11 that this location is now hiring, with positions now posted online. The post listed the store as set to open in late 2026.

The University Drive location is scheduled to open in late 2027, Jackson said.

Zooming in: According to a listing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations, the Robson Ranch store, which will be 133,975 square feet, has an estimated construction cost of roughly $60.52 million. The store will also have a fuel station and car wash with an estimated construction cost of $1.4 million.

The University Drive location, which will be 126,841 square feet, has an estimated $30.25 million construction cost.

Texas senators indicated Sept. 1 that they intend to tighten regulations on data centers during next year’s legislative session, which begins in January.

What they're saying: “I think every member's district has had an impact from a data center conversation, so there will be plenty of bills trying to put things in place that are reasonable, responsible regulatory frameworks for data centers,” state Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, said.

The big picture: With some Texas residents and conservation groups sounding the alarm about water-intensive technologies used by some data centers, state agencies have warned that limited information is available on how much water the industry actually uses. Officials said they have also had trouble determining exactly how many data centers are operating in the state today, as there is no “comprehensive statewide list” of existing and planned facilities.

Estimates from state agencies and the University of Texas at Austin suggest that roughly 370 data centers are currently operating in Texas, with about 100 facilities under construction and another 180 being proposed.
