Tomball City Council, TEDC to meet May 12 as Legacy Square planning continues downtown

Tomball officials are expected to get a closer look May 12 at how the former First Baptist Church Tomball campus can work as a long-term arts, entertainment and community hub.

The details: Tomball City Council and the Tomball Economic Development Corp. are slated to meet jointly at 3 p.m. May 12 to hear a presentation from Duncan Webb with Webb Management on the Tomball Legacy Square feasibility study, according to the agenda. 

The Tomball Legacy Square Board Committee is also expected to discuss the study during the meeting.

What you need to know: The final feasibility report, dated May 1, lays out a possible future for the 4.6-acre former church campus as a cultural campus with three main pieces: a multipurpose performance hall in the former sanctuary, exhibit space in the 1949 chapel and an arts education center in the fellowship hall, according to the agenda packet.

The Village Fit Co. to open its doors in May

As previously reported, The Village Fit Co. is a local community gym with a focus on health and community. Founder Kayla Medellin confirmed the gym’s grand opening on May 16.

The grand opening: To celebrate the opening of the new facility, The Village Fit Co. will be hosting a grand opening event for the local community on May 16, from 9-11 a.m. Locals are encouraged to come and tour the facility itself and meet the coaching and training staff. 

Quote of note: “Our vision was never just to open a gym,” Medellin said. “God made a way to create this place. A place where families could come together, where people do hard things together, and where we could lay a foundation of generational health for our children and the generations to come.”

Lone Star College System to launch new, expanded mental health programs

Lone Star College System has been launching new and expanded mental health and wellness programs for students and employees, with the next services slated to roll out in stages over the next few months.

Major takeaways: In March, LSCS mental health services were instituted, expanded or brought in-house for a soft launch of the programming. Current mental health services offered in-person and virtually by LSCS are:

  • Short-term individual counseling
  • Group counseling
  • Career counseling
  • Consultations for students, staff, parents and families
  • Resources and referrals

A sneak peek: In August, new mental health services will be debuted, including:
  • Telepsychiatry services
  • A crisis phone line for 24/7 help

The impact: From the fall of 2024 to the spring of 2026, LSCS received 7,898 requests for help from 5,106 students for various mental health and wellness resources, according to the presentation. By 2030, LSCS leaders are hoping to see 65% of students, not including dual-credit high school students, using mental health and wellness support services, according to the presentation.

Vonlane motor coach route between Houston metro and Austin opens in The Woodlands

The luxury motor coach service Vonlane announced its departure point from the Houston metro in The Woodlands to Austin began service May 4. The route is the 12th for the company.

Vonlane launched a route between The Woodlands and Dallas last year.

What to expect: Vonlane now offers service between The Woodlands and Austin seven days a week at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, 1601 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, and DoubleTree by Hilton Austin-University Area, 1617 N. I-35, Austin.
