Tomball ISD approves calendar for 2027-28 academic year

At its Feb. 10 meeting, Tomball ISD trustees officially approved the calendar for the upcoming 2027-28 school year.

The gist: Due to families’ requests to plan for summer vacation and spring break earlier in the year, the TISD board began to approve the academic calendar two years in advance, board Vice President John E. McStravick said.

The instructional calendar was presented at the Feb. 9 meeting by Director of Administrative Services Karen Graves. Graves said that the big question she and the calendar committee ask before planning the yearly calendar is, “Is this going to be the best thing for our students with instruction?”

According to the approved 2027-28 calendar, the instructional period will run from Aug. 17, 2027, to May 25, 2028. Instructional dates include:

  • First day of school: Aug. 17, 2027
  • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 22-26, 2027

Magnolia council approves deal tied to planned Academy Sports + Outdoors

An incentive deal aimed at landing a new Academy Sports + Outdoors is now moving forward in Magnolia after City Council approved a Chapter 380 economic development agreement with Capital Retail Properties at its Feb. 10 meeting.

What we know: City leaders described the agreement as performance-based and tied to new sales tax revenue from the project. Located on an approximately 7-acre tract near the intersection of FM 1488 and Spur 149, at least 50,000 square feet of retail space will be set aside for the store, according to the agenda packet.

The stipulation is that the project create and maintain at least 40 jobs, and the incentive is sales-tax-based and capped at $750,000 over 15 years, Magnolia Economic Development Executive Director Rachel Steele said.

“If sales taxes are not generated, then the development does not receive the benefit of that economic … incentive,” City Attorney Leonard Schneider told the council during the meeting.
