Conroe Annual Black History Parade & Celebration
On Feb. 14, Conroe will be hosting its annual Black History Month parade, with the official theme for this year being Unity in the Community. The central point of the parade is to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., through “community and joyful connection," according to its website.

Mindful Health now offering mental health services in Conroe

Founded by Jennifer Wood, Mindful Health opened a new location in Conroe on January 19, officials confirmed. Visitors are invited to the new facilities location on Feb. 13 from 1-4 p.m. for an open house.

What they offer: According to the website, the mental health clinic operates with an experienced team of therapists, psychiatrists, and wellness professionals offering evidence-based treatments for depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder and more. With services offered in person and virtually, Mindful Health has five additional locations in Cypress, Georgetown, Heath, Rockwall and San Antonio.

Lone Star College System celebrates record breaking spring enrollment

The Lone Star College System kicked off 2026 with the highest spring enrollment in the institution's history, officials announced Feb. 4.

Two-minute impact: Lone Star College System saw a 6.4% increase in enrollment compared to spring 2025, with 97,221 students enrolled for the spring 2026 semester, per the Feb. 4 news release.

Additionally, officials reported a fall-to-spring retention rate of almost 80% for the spring semester, which began Jan. 20. The milestone builds off record-breaking numbers for fall enrollment in 2025, with 97,294 students taking classes last semester, Community Impact previously reported.

Quote of note: "Lone Star College System isn't just seeing enrollment growth. We're retaining and graduating more students year after year," Chancellor Mario K. Castillo said in a statement. "This is a true testament to the support we offer students beyond the classroom, from food pantries and mental health services to student life programs that keep students engaged in their educational goals."

Family-owned Mexican cafe holds grand opening in the Houston Heights

Alturas Mexican Cafe opened Feb. 6 at 2409 Airline Drive, Ste. 100, Houston, serving authentic, flavorful meals that reflect Mexican traditions and heritage. 

Founded by the Navarro family, the cafe is dedicated to preserving recipes passed down through generations, according to the website.

The menu features classic items such as enchiladas and street tacos, as well as more cultural dishes such as Pambazo, Milanesa and Quecas, which are fried corn tortilla quesadillas stuffed with melted cheese and protein.

Bellaire baker turns a life of travel into cakes inspired by the world’s flavors

From Central Asia to Southeastern Europe, baker Goha Dosmuratova finds inspiration for her homemade recipes from around the world.

After closing her bakery in Romania and moving to Texas in 2024, Dosmuratova opened a new shop at 6300 W. Loop S., Ste. 130, Bellaire, serving custom cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

“I'm a sweet tooth person,” Dosmuratova said. “I love desserts, I love cakes, and when you travel around the world ... and you don't like the taste, but you really want the cake, you're just trying to bake it yourself to make it perfect. So that's how I came up with my recipes.”

Texans will see candidates for 18 statewide positions on the March primary ballot, including one state railroad commissioner, the state land commissioner and the state agriculture commissioner.

The overview: Despite its name, the Railroad Commission of Texas does not govern the state’s railroads. So what do railroad commissioners and the leaders of other Texas agencies do?

Community Impact compiled information about various state agencies to help inform Texans before they head to the polls for the March primary elections.

At the polls: Early voting runs from Feb. 17-27, and primary election day is March 3.
