New pizza place coming to League City

Papa's Pizza is slated to open its doors to its second-ever location in League City by the beginning of November, an employee with the restaurant said.

On the menu: The restaurant serves a variety of pizzas with unique toppings, including barbecue chicken, chicken fajita, Philly cheesesteak and spinach alfredo. Other menu items include calzones, wings, sandwiches and piadas.

Soda bar coming to League City

Chuggie's, a dirty soda bar, will open in League City on Oct. 11, according to a social media post from the business.

The details: The business specializes in dirty sodas, which, according to social media posts from the business, include starting with a base of soda, adding in syrup, which comes in a variety of flavors, followed by cream. The business will offer a variety of sodas, as well as different syrup and cream flavors.

Stay tuned: Located in the Kolache Bakery, Chuggie's will celebrate its grand opening on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the social media page. The event will feature discounted drinks, raffle prizes and a sneak peek at the bar's menu.

Houston airports first in Texas to offer free ASL services to passengers

William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental airports, as of September, are offering an on-demand American Sign Language interpreting service, Aira ASL, to passengers, according to a Sept. 18 news release from Houston Airports.

The service is free to passengers, and is the first of its kind to be offered in Texas, the news release notes. 

The overview: Aira ASL is an app that connects users to professional ASL interpreters from a live video feed.

Diving in deeper: The interpreter, according to the release, can assist travelers with some of the following throughout the airport:

  • Check-in counters
  • Gates
  • Restrooms
  • Concessions
  • Baggage claim

Quote of note: “Accessibility is not optional. It is a core part of how we serve the public,” Houston Airports Director of Aviation Jim Szczesniak said in the news release. “With this launch, we are advancing our passenger experience strategy and setting a new benchmark for inclusive travel.”

Texas-based start up Base Power launches in Houston

Base Power, an energy company founded in 2023 and headquartered in Austin, officially launched in Houston on Sept. 24, according to a news release. 

Community Impact previously reported that the energy company originally opened in the Cy-Fair, Spring, Cinco Ranch and Mission Bend communities following its launch in Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth.

What you need to know: Co-owned by Zach Dell, Base Power is the only Texas energy provider that comes with a home backup power, according to the news release. The energy company offers an all-in-one energy plan that includes an entire home backup battery. When the grid goes down, the battery automatically powers the home, according to the release. 

Quote of note: “Houston has long been the energy capital of Texas, yet it has also endured some of the nation’s most painful lessons about unreliable power,” dell Said.
