Prosper officials to consider Zipline drone delivery service for Walmart

Prosper residents could soon have the option to receive Walmart groceries by drone, joining other North Texas cities, such as McKinney and Lewisville.

What you need to know: At a July 22 council work session, Prosper Town Council members heard a presentation about Zipline, a drone delivery service partnering with Walmart to expand grocery delivery in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area. Director of Development Services David Hoover said the proposed site for the service is the Walmart Supercenter at the Gates of Prosper.

Quote of note: “We’ve been working on an amendment to our existing [drone] ordinance, and basically we’ve [narrowed] this down to where the place we could do it is Walmart, so we can try it and see if we like it,” Hoover said.

Looking ahead: No ordinance changes have been brought forward yet, but staff is drafting an amendment to allow for a test program of the drones.

Texas Senate passes congressional map, flood relief with House Democrats out of state

The Texas Senate advanced 11 bills Aug. 12, including a plan to redraw the state’s congressional districts and three measures aimed at better preparing communities for floods and other natural disasters.

The overview: The bills face an unclear future in the Texas House, which has been at a standstill since dozens of Democrats traveled to Illinois and other states Aug. 3 to stall a planned vote on the proposed congressional map. The 150-member House cannot refer bills to committees or vote on legislation without at least 100 members present.

Stay tuned: If House Democrats do not return, state leaders said the current special legislative session will end Aug. 15. Gov. Greg Abbott said he would “immediately” call another legislative overtime with a potentially expanded agenda.
