Developer of The Domain partners with legacy family on 1,200-acres

The group known for spearheading The Domain has partnered with Robinson Family Management to develop more than 1,200 acres in North Austin.

The overview: The Robinson family and Endeavor Real Estate Group announced June 24 a partnership to develop two portions of the 6,400-acre ranch that spreads from North Austin and into Round Rock.

Bryce Miller, co-founder and managing principal of Endeavor, said in a news release that properties like the Robinson Ranch are rare.

The ranch, sprawling throughout an area in North Austin and at the crossroads for SH 45 and MoPac, has been owned and operated by the Robinson family for six generations.

Going forward: It is unclear what the property will shape into, although Endeavor and the family plan to analyze the area’s transportation, utility and other infrastructure along with the property’s unique role in the Central Texas area. According to the release, over the coming months the partnership will include research, analysis, stakeholder engagement and coordination with regional partners.

ATCEMS expands hiring amid record calls and staffing challenges in west Travis County

Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services provides emergency medical response to over 1.4 million Austin and Travis County residents, and as of May 27 was operating with 107 vacancies, according to Wesley Hopkins, ATCEMS chief of staff.

Staffing vacancies within the department lead to increased overtime for existing personnel, resulting in a consistent increase in ATCEMS’s overtime budget.

“Having the ability to staff ambulances on overtime is certainly an option, but, of course, it’s not sustainable,” Hopkins said.

A closer look: The ATCEMS overtime budget has steadily grown over the past five years, as 2021 overtime accounted for 16.59% of the personnel budget. Now, 25.54% of the personnel budget is allocated to overtime.

ATCEMS also lost the opportunity for over $2.5 million in funding for ambulances and staff after Proposition Q was rejected by voters in November.

The proposition asked voters to approve a 20% increase in property taxes, or a rate of $0.574017 per $100 in property value.

Report: Camp Mystic failed to prevent deaths, shirked responsibilities in July 4 flood

About two weeks shy of the anniversary of deadly flooding that devastated parts of Central Texas last summer, state lawmakers approved a 115-page report chronicling what they deemed “failures” at Camp Mystic, a Christian youth camp where 27 young girls died.

The details: The family running Camp Mystic was not prepared to respond to a disaster in flood-prone Kerr County and did not act quickly enough to save campers’ lives, investigators said during a June 18 hearing at the Capitol.

Investigators Casey Garrett and Michael Massengale told lawmakers about recent interviews with teenage counselors who witnessed the July 4 tragedy, reiterating a key point from hearings earlier this year: all deaths at Camp Mystic could have been prevented if camp leaders had planned ahead and acted more quickly.

"Nobody had any idea what they needed to be doing, and it crippled them," Garrett said.

Looking ahead: Lawmakers adopted the investigative team’s report, which will be shared with legislative leaders as they draft additional policy changes in response to the flood during the 2027 state legislative session.
