Mr. G’s Pizzeria marks 30 years as friendship preserves legacy

For years, customers walking into Mr. G’s Pizzeria in Historic Downtown Bryan were likely to find founder Giovanni “Mr. G” Cerone at a table, paperwork spread out as he greeted regulars and newcomers alike. Nearly five years after his passing, that presence lingers in the 30-year-old restaurant, where recipes and traditions remain largely unchanged.

The backstory: Owner Susan Carnes and her husband met Mr. G while picking up a pizza for their children after celebrating their 10-year anniversary downtown.
A brief stop turned into a two-hour conversation, beginning a friendship that would eventually lead Carnes to take over the restaurant when Mr. G retired.

On the menu: The restaurant serves Italian classics and favorites, including pizzas, calzones, pastas and desserts, plus signature dishes.

Only two people still know the original pizza dough recipe.

Staying local: Carnes described the downtown space, which was once a furniture gallery, as a “7,000-square-foot elephant” that’s endured decades of change.

“As long as we’re able, Mr. G’s will be here,” she said.
