The city of McKinney’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 totals $880 million which includes funding for general operations, water and wastewater services, and more.

Officials are also proposing a nearly 1.4% increase to McKinney’s property tax rate, according to a staff presentation. McKinney City Council members are expected to consider and take action on the proposed budget and tax rate in September following a citizen input meeting later this month.

The overview: Council members and city staff reviewed the proposed FY2026-27 budget during an Aug. 7 workshop.

City officials are proposing a property tax rate set at $0.417876 per $100 valuation. That’s higher than last fiscal year’s rate which was approved at $0.412284 per $100 valuation.

Breaking down the budget: The city budget is made up of dozens of different funds including a general fund that budgets for major services such as public safety, public works and parks that are provided by the city.

District officials and staff are preparing for the upcoming school year, which begins Aug. 13.

McKinney ISD teachers, administrators and school board members gathered to kick off the 2026-27 school year at MISD's convocation Aug. 7.

The details: The event at the district's stadium included speeches from Superintendent Shawn Pratt, McKinney Mayor Bill Cox and more. Members of all three MISD high schools' marching bands, as well as cheer teams and performing arts groups, performed during the event.

1. Celestica expansion in Richardson: The tech company Celestica is expanding its Richardson facility with a new 225,000-square-foot building, according to TDLR documents. An estimated 2,300 jobs will be created in the process, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

Over 300 employees at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport will be laid off, according to a Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification, or WARN, notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission.

The details: The affected 313 employees are from the airport’s Terminal Link, rental car services, express parking and a main building per the notice dated July 31. The layoff date is Sept. 30.

The layoffs impact employees of Chicago-based parking company SP Plus, which is a subsidiary of Metropolis Technologies. SP Plus did not have its contract renewed after the airport’s board of directors opted to award a nearly $627.4 million contract to LAZ Parking Texas LLC on June 4.

More details: Based on the WARN notice, the affected employees include:

• 130 from the rental car operations
• 90 from express parking
• 87 from the Terminal Link shuttle service
• Six assigned to a main building
