Katy City Council OKs nearly $549K contract for East Fourth Street and Airline Drive asphalt project

Several Katy roads are set to see new asphalt by the end of the year.

What you need to know: At its July 13 meeting, Katy City Council approved a $548,985 construction contract with Environmental Allies Inc. for asphalt replacement on East Fourth Street and Airline Drive.

The project includes the mill and overlay of the existing pavement, full-depth repairs at select locations, ditch regrading and replacement of culverts and driveways, according to agenda documents.

Also of note: The work—which will be funded by the city’s capital improvement plan—also includes a 180-foot long segment of new waterline on East Third Street at Katyland Drive.

Next steps: Construction will begin in mid-August with a completion date estimated to be in mid-December, City Engineer David Kasper said.

Hear Again America to open new Katy location

Hearing specialists Hear Again America is slated to open a Katy location, owner Shawn Sorokoski confirmed.

The setup: The business provides hearing evaluations, care and hearing aid fittings, Sorokoski said. Other offerings include tinnitus treatment, online hearing screenings and speech evaluations, according to the company’s website.

Wing drone delivery service expands to 8 additional Greater Houston-area Walmarts

Wing, a drone delivery service, is now available at eight additional Walmart locations across the Greater Houston area, company officials announced via a July 8 news release.

What's new: Beginning July 8, drone delivery service is now also available at the following Greater Houston-area Walmart locations:

How it works: Per the release, the partnership allows Walmart customers to receive groceries and other household essentials via drone delivery, bypassing roadway traffic often faced by traditional delivery services.

Common Bond officials celebrate late June opening at William P. Hobby Airport

Officials with Common Bond celebrated a June 29 opening of their new location at Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport, according to a June 29 news release.

The details: The new Common Bond location combines the brand's to-go concept with its bistro and bakery options to offer both on-the-go and dine-in options, per the release.

Items on the eatery's menu include:

  • Sandwiches
  • Pastries
  • Salads
  • Cakes
  • Cookies
  • Drip coffee and lattes
  • Iced refreshers and energy drinks

What else? Common Bond opened its first bistro and bakery in Houston’s Montrose area in May 2014, according to the release.
