Universal City volleyball academy breaks ground on 76,000-square-foot sports center

A locally-owned volleyball academy is expanding in Northeast San Antonio with the construction of a new multisport training facility.

South Texas Volleyball Academy broke ground on a 76,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art training facility earlier this year at 18531 FM 2252 in San Antonio, near Garden Ridge and Bracken, according to a Facebook post.

Zooming in: The training facility—named Victory One Sports Center—will have approximately 60,000 square feet of court space for volleyball, basketball and pickleball. There will also be a 16,000-square-foot strength and conditioning center along with two retail spaces.

Victory One Sports Center is anticipated to be completed this summer, according to the post. 

The context: South Texas Volleyball Academy was formed in 1980 and offers spring and fall youth leagues and club teams for both boys and girls, plus various tournaments throughout the year. The academy also participates, trains and competes in beach volleyball tournaments, according to the club's website.

Here’s what Texans should know about the 2026 elections

2026 is a big election year in Texas. Voters will see 18 statewide races, all congressional seats, most state legislative seats and a variety of local positions on the ballot.

The overview: The Republican and Democratic primary elections will be held March 3, and the midterm election is set for Nov. 3.

Texas holds primaries for all partisan elected positions, such as state officials; state and federal lawmakers; and county judges, commissioners and justices of the peace. Third-party candidates, including independents, Libertarian Party candidates and Green Party candidates, have separate election processes will not be listed on the primary ballots in March. Eligible candidates representing various parties will appear on the November ballot.

Looking back: All statewide offices on the ballot are currently held by Republicans, although some are not running for reelection. No Democrat or third-party candidate has won a statewide office in Texas since 1994, election records show.

Check out these new restaurants and bars opening across the San Antonio area.

A Mexican-inspired cafe and bakery has officially unveiled its newest location in the San Antonio metro.

La Panadería Bakery Café held a grand opening for the new eatery Dec. 17. The restaurant is located in the Stone Oak area at 1011 N. Loop 1604 E.

“Stone Oak is a vibrant and growing area, and we’re excited to bring La Panadería to a new part of the city,” owner Jose Cáceres said in a news release.

A fast-casual restaurant chain is continuing to expand this year, adding a brand new location in San Antonio.

Teriyaki Madness opened its 200th overall location Dec. 19, according to a news release from the chain. It’s located near the Stone Oak area at 18410 N. Hwy. 281.

The new restaurant is the chain’s fifth in San Antonio, and the second owned by franchisees Daniel Gifford and Gilbert Vergara.

“San Antonio knows good food and good people, which is exactly why Teriyaki Madness has been so loved here,” Gifford said in the release.
