Keller officials table Kroger Marketplace plans after fuel center changes

Keller City Council granted a request from Kroger to table a specific use permit approval at the Oct. 6 meeting for a planned Kroger Marketplace.

The gist: Sarah Hensley, Keller's director of development services, said the grocery chain altered plans for the fuel center kiosk, increasing the size previously proposed.

The plan is for a 99,992-square-foot grocery store with fuel pumps, a pharmacy with a drive-through, outdoor display and seasonal sales. The development is on a 17.58-acre tract of land, according to city documents.

Going forward: The SUP request will have to navigate back through the Keller Planning and Zoning Commission. Council voted to table the public hearing for the proposal until the Dec. 1 meeting.

Planning and zoning will meet Nov. 10. During that meeting, Hensley said the commission will review the SUP, the revised site plan and the alcohol sales variance due to the proximity to Keller High School property.

As lawmakers consider expanding TEFA funding, some public schools say they're losing money

Ahead of Texas' 2027 legislative session, the state comptroller's office has asked lawmakers to double funding for its $1 billion education savings account program.

The overview: The program gives participating families taxpayer dollars for private education and homeschooling, and officials said at least $2 billion are needed to maintain current participation in the program.

Meanwhile, some Texas families are raising concerns about their local school districts losing money as students leave public schools to participate in the program, known as Texas Education Freedom Accounts.

What they're saying: "149 students have accepted vouchers that were otherwise enrolled in Pflugerville ISD, [resulting in] an estimated loss of $1.2 million in attendance funding," said Stacy Harrell, a PfISD parent. "That lost funding will add to budget cuts that are already affecting Pflugerville ISD families. Four elementary schools [are closing], with the possibility of more."
