Lake Houston Dredging and Maintenance District officials set early goals for fledgling district

Lake Houston Dredging and Maintenance District board members discussed early obstacles the district will face as it lays the groundwork for continued dredging operations in Lake Houston.

The details: Board Chair William Simpson indicated five major areas of work that will need to be completed as the district gets off the ground, including:

  • Developing a scope of work
  • Estimating costs
  • Determining a funding plan
  • Creating schedule milestones
  • Developing a procurement plan

Some context: State lawmakers approved House Bill 1532—authored by state Rep. Charles Cunningham, R-Humble—in May 2025, resulting in the creation of the Lake Houston Dredging and Maintenance District.

A closer look: Williams said the district’s most pressing matter is to create a funding plan that will be submitted to state lawmakers during the 2027 legislative session.

What’s next: The district will meet regularly at 11 a.m. on the third Monday of each month in Partnership Lake Houston’s conference room, 110 W. Main St., Humble.

St. Luke’s Health to adopt CommonSpirit Health name

St. Luke’s Health will add its parent company to its name in October as it expands its partnership with Baylor School of Medicine, officials announced in an Aug. 17 news release.

Read all about it: The name addition aims to unite and emphasize the shared values between St. Luke’s Health and CommonSpirit Health, a faith-based healthcare provider that serves as a parent company for over 2,300 care sites in the nation, according to the release. 

The name change also aims to bridge the local and national networks.

Zooming out: Over the past year, Baylor School of Medicine and St. Luke’s have also expanded their partnership to invite more Baylor specialists to join St. Luke’s.

Q&A: Get to know 3 candidates for Texas Railroad Commissioner

Texas voters will choose from Republican Bo French, Libertarian Arthur DiBianca and Democrat Jon Rosenthal in this November's Texas Railroad Commission race.

The details: The winner of the race will be sworn in to replace incumbent Commissioner Jim Wright in January.

French beat Wright in a May Republican primary runoff, advancing to the general election. Rosenthal ran uncontested in the March Democratic primary, while DiBianca was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Did you know? The three-member railroad commission does not have any jurisdiction over the state's railroads—that authority was transferred to the Texas Department of Transportation and the federal government by 2005, according to the commission's website. Instead, the agency regulates Texas' oil and gas industries.

Looking ahead: Early voting in dozens of local and state races runs from Oct. 19-30, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
