Q&A: Meet the candidates for Collin County Commissioner Precinct 4

Two candidates are running for Collin County Commissioner Precinct 4 this November.

Early voting for the Nov. 3 election runs from Oct. 19-30.

The details: Former Plano Deputy Mayor Pro Tem and Democratic candidate Julie Holmer will be running against former Plano City Council Member and Republican candidate Shelby Williams this November. The Collin County Comissioner Precinct 4 position represents Plano, Allen and some of Carrollton and Dallas.

Coach Coffee Shop is now open in Allen, a company representative confirmed.

The specifics: The coffee shop is located within the Coach store at the Allen Premium Outlets and offers a variety of coffee, matcha and pastries. Coach Coffee Shop also offers strawberry or lavender-flavored lemonade.

Quote of note: "As only the second Coach Coffee Shop location in Texas, this exciting new concept brings together premium coffee and the iconic Coach brand in a unique and welcoming atmosphere," the Allen Premium Outlets' website states.

As lawmakers consider expanding TEFA funding, some public schools say they're losing money

Ahead of Texas' 2027 legislative session, the state comptroller's office has asked lawmakers to double funding for its $1 billion education savings account program.

The overview: The program gives participating families taxpayer dollars for private education and homeschooling, and officials said at least $2 billion are needed to maintain current participation in the program.

Meanwhile, some Texas families are raising concerns about their local school districts losing money as students leave public schools to participate in the program, known as Texas Education Freedom Accounts.

What they're saying: "149 students have accepted vouchers that were otherwise enrolled in Pflugerville ISD, [resulting in] an estimated loss of $1.2 million in attendance funding," said Stacy Harrell, a PfISD parent. "That lost funding will add to budget cuts that are already affecting Pflugerville ISD families. Four elementary schools [are closing], with the possibility of more."
