Willis ISD trustees receive updates on bond projects

Work is underway on several Willis ISD projects, including the construction of new campuses. Trustees received updates on the projects during their Dec. 10 meeting. See them below. This story is not comprehensive.

Ninth Grade Center: The center is a new expansion project for Willis High School as well as the parking lot. Permits are waiting to be approved from the city of Conroe, which has caused the project to be paused, WISD Chief Operations Officer Bob Eaton said at the Dec. 10 meeting.

Transportation Center: The new center will accommodate 100 buses along with staff offices. The guaranteed max price was approved for $4.9 million for the construction manager at the Dec. 10 meeting.

Montgomery chapter of Sons of the American Revolution hosting Wreaths Across America event

The annual Wreaths Across America event will take place Dec. 14 at New Montgomery Cemetery, with the Montgomery Freedom chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution also participating.

The overview: Wreaths Across America is a national event that seeks to honor fallen veterans on the holidays with wreaths at their grave sites. According to its website, the ceremony is held at more than 4,900 different locations throughout all 50 states.

What to expect: The ceremony is free and open to the public, SAR Montgomery Freedom chapter President David Hamaker said. SAR chapter members will be on-site dressed in colorful colonial gear, as many members can trace their ties back to the American Revolution. SAR members will place the ribboned wreaths on the graves of fallen military soldiers and say their names to honor and remember them.

Co-founded by rapper and entrepreneur Bun B, Trill Burgers opened Dec. 10 in Missouri City.

The restaurant serves classic smashed burgers, including the signature OG Burger, the Triple Vegan OG Burger and Lil G, according to a news release.

Taste Kitchen + Bar opened its second location in Sugar Land on Dec. 10, offering a lakefront patio and private dining room.

The menu features Southern cuisine curated by Houston Chef Don Bowie, including Cajun seafood and grits, lobster BLTs and jerk lamb chops.

There are several transportation projects taking place around the Conroe and Montgomery area. Check out updates to them below. This list is not comprehensive.

Hwy. 105 widening
Project: Hwy. 105 is being widened from two to four lanes between 10th Street and South Loop 336.
Update: According to a Nov. 10 media update from TxDOT, this project is 53% completed.

  • Timeline: March 2023-second quarter 2028
  • Cost: $52.65 million
  • Funding source: state funds

I-45 direct connector
Project: A direct connector is being constructed to connect northbound I-45 to eastbound Hwy. 242.
Update: This project is 10% complete, according to TxDOT’s Nov. 10 media update.
  • Timeline: second quarter 2025-third quarter 2028
  • Cost: $42.63 million
  • Funding source: federal, state funds
