Mike Yaker opened Cafe Ninda in 2024 with a love of good pastries and a goal to share them with the Tomball community.

As a local, family-owned business, Yaker said Cafe Ninda focuses on quality, freshness and presentation.

On the menu: Croissants are some of Cafe Ninda’s best sellers, with flavors ranging from classic butter and chocolate to almond, pistachio and fruit. The cafe also offers its Dubai chocolate croissant, combining chocolate and pistachio in a crispy treat.

Customers can also try mini iced fruit cakes made with white chocolate, real fruit and a frozen gelato-style ice cream filling.

Quote of note: “We want people to come in, feel comfortable, have a coffee, try something new and enjoy their time here with friends or family,” Yaker said.

According to a Sept. 25 TDLR filing, a new Jason’s Deli location will be coming to Tomball in June.

Two-minute impact: The official project documents state the project will cost an estimated $800,000; the funds will be put toward renovating the existing area into a self-serve location.

Renovations include basic additions such as ordering counters, dining interiors and a salad bar area. Construction is set to begin Jan. 4 and be completed on June 28, although no opening date is available as of press time.

Greater Houston is hosting several events this October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These events, which are subject to change, include:

• Light it up Pink on Oct. 1 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Market Street in The Woodlands, featuring a photo opportunity, a pink tote bag and a light-up baton.

• Pour for Pink on Oct. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sonoma Wine & Cheese in Katy, featuring a wine and cheese tasting and a mini market.

• In the Pink of Health Luncheon on Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott to raise money for cancer prevention, education and outreach.

• Annual Breast Cancer Walkathon on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at Elizabeth Kaiser Meyer Park in Spring.

Two candidates are competing for the Place 7 at-large position on the board of trustees for the Harris County Department of Education in the upcoming Nov. 3 election. Democratic incumbent Silky Joshi-Malik will face Republican challenger Denise Dick in the race.

Heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding will threaten large parts of Texas this week, Gov. Greg Abbott told reporters Sept. 28.

The overview: The governor pointed to severe flooding that occurred in South-Central Texas in mid-July, damaging property, sweeping cars off roadways and killing two people. This week's storms will impact "a far more vast portion of the state" than the July flooding, he warned.

The details: Abbott said heavy rains will "really dramatically affect" the majority of the state on Sept. 30, and the National Weather Service noted that "North-Central Texas is a particular concern."

"We don't have the information needed right now to advise Texans on exactly what's going to happen in our rivers," Abbott told reporters. "I can tell you this, however: Everyone should expect the rivers to rise."
