Lake Travis ISD's second high school to be named Highland Lakes High School

The Lake Travis ISD board of trustees voted Feb. 18 to name the district's upcoming second high school Highland Lakes High School, with its official school colors being dark green, blue and white. The school is slated to open in the 2029-30 school year, a year later than initial projections.

The update: About 450 school names were submitted in a community survey between Dec. 3-Jan. 12. According to district officials, board policy establishes criteria for facility naming based on local residential or geographic areas, landmarks and historical significance, and cannot be named after people in the district. Officials also said administration looked at neighboring campuses and potential competitive districts before recommending the school colors, and an official branding process to name the colors will take place later.

Looking back: Voters approved construction of the new school as part of the 2022 bond. The school is slated to have a 1,500 student capacity with various fine arts and athletics amenities.

What's next: Administration's next steps will include attendance rezoning and a student-led mascot selection process.

Owner and self-proclaimed pitmaestro Rico Smith started sharing his barbecue skills with the community while he was working at Texas Roadhouse. Throughout the 2014 summertime, Smith crafted his meals in his apartment complex and his brother made deliveries.

“People would tell me, ‘Hey, it's really good. You should open up a place,’” Smith said. “I'd never listen to what they would say. I loved my job where I was. Eventually over time it does start getting to you and that's when I took a leap of faith.”
