SP Brazilian Steakhouse serves prime cuts, family traditions in Lakeway

SP Brazilian Steakhouse has offered authentic Brazilian churrasco in Lakeway for nearly a decade.

Respecting the craft: The steakhouse specializes in authentic churrasco, where 14 cuts of prime-aged meat are carefully seasoned and slow-roasted over open flames, owner Ileana Salazar said.

Guests start with a self-serve salad bar with more than 34 options, including hot side dishes, then use red and green cards to signal gauchos to bring tableside servings of meat, carved straight onto plates.

A family affair: Salazar said SP’s success is deeply rooted in family. She handles the administrative side, including permits and licenses, while her husband, Jesus, oversees kitchen operations and develops recipes.

Staying local: Since opening in Sept. 2017, the steakhouse has built a customer base that includes many repeat visitors.

Salazar said SP aims to serve the community whenever possible, including delivering free food and water during the Feb. 2021 ice storm and donating cooked turkeys each Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Leander ISD now projecting up to $13.7M shortfall, despite reductions

Leander ISD officials are putting together the latest budget projections for 2026-27, and the district is estimating between a $6.8 million to $13.7 million shortfall. The projections are down from original estimates of a nearly $19.6 million shortfall.

The overview: According to executive director of business Gina Mitschke, LISD's demographer population and survey analysts is projecting an enrollment of 41,841 students next year, a decrease of 607 students from the current 2025-26 year.

Officials have already outlined $10.8 million worth of expenditure reductions to make, which includes the Faubion Elementary consolidation, staffing ratio adjustments and central office reductions.
Pape said district administration is also exploring a variety of revenue generators.

The budget also includes $1 million in revenue from the special education allotment approved during the last Texas Legislative session. Other budget considerations include a Voter Approval Tax Rate Election.

Something to note: The board could also increase the current budget parameter, or how much the district can spend beyond its revenue, from 1.5% to 3%.

ERCOT, developers detail plans to manage data center growth amid legislative scrutiny

The Texas power grid is undergoing “generational” growth, experts said during the Electric Reliability Council of Texas’ annual summit March 31 in Round Rock. Much of that growth is due to data centers—an industry under scrutiny from state lawmakers as some Texas communities push back against proposed developments.

The big picture: Over 2,000 projects totaling 453,000 megawatts are currently looking to connect to the state grid, ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas said April 1. About 357,000 megawatts of those connection requests are potential data centers, ERCOT documents show.

Looking ahead: Communities should take the lead on discussions about individual data center projects, Vegas told reporters. He said that when “communities that are ready to support those investments,” ERCOT is prepared to help data centers connect to the grid.

During a March 31 discussion on data centers, panelists noted that the projects have an “increasingly high” negative reputation in communities across the state. Austin consultant Eric Goff said developers often need to make commitments to local residents to earn their support for data center proposals.
