Georgetown Palace Theatre to reopen May 29 after flood causes $500K in damage

Georgetown's Palace Theatre reopens May 29 with "Jesus Christ Superstar," after a Jan. 25 flood caused over $500,000 in damages.

What happened: A sump pump failure beneath the 100-year-old theater caused water from a natural spring to rise 3 1/2 feet, destroying 54 seats and damaging carpet, sound systems, electrical equipment and stored drapery, Development Director Debra Heater said.

The Georgetown community raised over $400,000 in four months, including a $100,000 matching grant from the W.D. Kelley Foundation that was met in four days.

What's changing: Construction company 1836 Legacy Construction completed most restoration work in two months, replacing the beige-and-red color scheme with updated art deco styling. All 291 seats are being replaced with gold and black chairs, expected in three to four months.

The nonprofit theater built in 1925 brings 50,000 visitors a year to the square and provides a significant economic boost to downtown businesses, Heater said.

Get involved: The theater needs about $100,000 more. Donors can contribute through general donations and ticket sales or the Save a Seat campaign.
