Kyle reevaluates 6 priority intersections marked for roundabouts

On Aug. 18, the Kyle City Council approved an almost $500,000 re-evaluation of 12 intersections, with roundabouts recommended, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The results of intersection analyses at six priority locations were presented on Oct. 20.

What happened: Rodriguez Transportation Group, Inc. analyzed the operational and safety aspects at six Kyle intersections and recommended the best road remedy for each.

The six priority intersections included:

  • Center Street at Old Stagecoach Road

  • Kohlers Crossing at Sanders

  • Kohlers Crossing at Benner

  • Windy Hill Road at Cherrywood

  • Lehman Road at Bunton Creek Road

  • Goforth Road at Bunton Creek Road

Of the six intersections re-evaluated, four were recommended for road remedies other than roundabouts and two were recommended to continue pursuing roundabouts.

The results: The council voted to move forward with roundabouts at the Center Street at Old Stagecoach Road and Goforth Road at Bunton Creek Road intersections.

Council members also voted to switch the plans at the Windy Hill Road at Cherrywood and Lehman Road at Bunton Creek Road intersections.

San Marcos council postpones funeral home zoning change, risking development partnership

Sinai Pentecostal Church in San Marcos requested a zoning change for the property to allow the development of a new facility for Pennington Funeral Home.

The San Marcos City Council postponed the vote on Oct. 20, risking the partnership between the church and the business.

The overview: Sinai Pentecostal Church submitted a request to rezone approximately 14.72 acres of land located on Hunter Road between W. San Antonio St. and Wonder World Drive from Future Development to Commercial.

Diving deeper: Council members voiced concerns regarding the property’s location in an environmentally sensitive area. The property is located in a floodplain and floodway, water quality zone and buffer zone and the Edwards Aquifer transition zone, according to agenda documents.

The discussion: Pennington Funeral Home would not be able to participate in the financial partnership with Sinai Pentecostal Church if the development process faced any more delays, said Representative Jessica Glosson Davis.

The council voted to postpone the decision.

'The next industrial revolution': Manufacturing Institute partners with Texas State Technical College on AI program

The Manufacturing Institute, or MI, and Texas State Technical College, or TSTC, have partnered on a new program that will help educate students on ways artificial intelligence can be integrated into manufacturing.

TSTC and MI officials formalized the partnership to bring the Manufacturing Institute's AI Skills for Manufacturing Training Suite to Texas at a ceremony on Oct. 22.

About the program: The program will provide manufacturing students at TSTC with instructional materials that show how AI can be integrated within their field to prepare them for the future of the industry when they enter the workforce.

Surveys show that over 50% of manufacturers are using AI in their operations, but less than 20% have AI training in place, which is where the AI Skills for Manufacturing program comes in, said Carolyn Lee, president and executive director of the MI.
